Looking for suggestions, not answers

I posted earlier and was refered to the FAQs.
I've looked through the FAQs, and they're great, but they dont help me just yet. I'm just looking for suggestions on where to start. I might be wrong, but I dont think going out and just buying a Y-pipe to install one weekend is the best idea for me. I dont know what I'd be getting myself into. So, if you can share some words of wisdom, that'd be great... thanks.

What are you looking to do? Better handling, performance? More hp?

The easiest two mods off the top of my head are the front strut tower bar and perhaps a JWT intake. Also, you can always a shop do the work you're not comfortable with. Also, try to find people in your area with modified Maximas and see what you like of theirs.

Check the regional forums for meets/gatherings in your area...

Performance, handling and look

I want better performance and look..

Im gonna start with a Y-pipe, then get CAI, but I dont know which work best with the 97, perfered brands. For look, I want to change the rims and tires and tint the windows. But, again, I dont know what brands to look for and how much I should be spending on any of this stuff.

go suspension first..max is decently fast enough by itself without mods.. but it turns like a boat.. even the SE feels pretty boaty..start with addco or progress rear sway bar, any cheap ebay front strut bar. springs and shocks.(agx is the way to go for struts.) just my 2 cents.

i agree. a nice suspension setup will definitely start your max off in the right direction. it will aid in performance and it gives the car a sporty, agressive look. you will need aftermarket struts and lowering springs. i have KYB AGX struts and H&R springs and i am very happy with their performance. it gives my car about a 1.5" drop. you can find a deal on the struts in the group deal forum, probably going to be around $330 shipped i think, and the springs you could hopefully find for under $200. you will most likely not be able to install these yourself, unless you have a spring compressor.
