100/80watt 9004's, new harness. Strain on the electrical system?
100/80watt 9004's, new harness. Strain on the electrical system?
The headlights in the car are so-so. They're sylvania Xtravisions. I'm thinking of getting a bulb that is 100/80 watts. No way I can afford HID, and I want to keep high beam/low beam ability. What type of wire harness upgrade would I have to do so I can use 100/80watt 9004 bulbs and not burn anything up? Also, will this put a noticable amount of strain on the battery and alternator? I suppose i could get a small 0.5 farad capacitor and put it in parallel with the battery, and also a better ground from the negative battery terminal to the frame with some 4 guage wire.
I don't want to strain the electrical system of the car. Thats my biggest concern. Money is also a concern.
Thanks.

Well I'm doing the same thing, kind of. I'm getting the GD XD5's (9004, H3, 1157, 194). I got the 9004 Wire Harness Upgrade from SouthWest Autoworks, hopefully that'll keep anything from blowing. But should I also be worried about my electrical system? I have no stereo mods or anything.(I pump up the Bose though...sounds alright)
You prolly won't notice any strain on power. You'll feel it when the headlights turn on, but that happens anyway with your stock wiring. Actually, there may be less strain when you turn you lights on with upgraded harness rather than stock because the lights are wired better than stock.
Maybe not, I dunno.

A capacitor is not going to help you when it comes to headlights. The capacitor is meant to handle a brief surge in power, like a bass beat from 50 cent, not the constant 80/100 watts that the lightbulbs will use.

the capacitor should help when I step on the brakes, or turn on the stereo, or do anything that cuases a quick power drain. I figured the electrical system would need this extra help from the cap. if the lights were going to be drawing that much extra power. Also, what about the extra grounding? Does anyone have a particular setup for this?
I have the PIAA super whites and they claim to put out something like 80/120, but actually draw the same as the stock 45/65. They sure bright up the road. I'm told that the Xtreme whites are even better and they don't require any upgrades either, not even fuses. Why spend $$ on harnesses?

Hey Juki, what does the upgraded harness package come with and what is the installation like? I'm considering on doing it if it doesn't entail much re-wiring or anything.

Well I actually haven't gotten them yet, they emailed me and said they would ship it on Monday, so I'm still waiting. I'll post up once I get them (although I'll have my mechanic put everything in for me when I get my oil change). As to answer emmettrose1962's "why spend $$$ on a harness"? For me, $15 for feeling of security for my bulbs and wires is worth it.

I recently put Hyper bulbs in my car and soon after both door and both dome lights stopped werkin???? Maybe its related and maybe not, i dont know nuffin about electricity stuff but i would like to replace my harness just for a little piece of mind.Where did you order the wire harness from?

With the stock battery, and my first amplifier (400w MTX), headlight dimming was rare. You should be fine on the stock power system with upgraded headlights.
I've run 80/100w headlights and 2000 watts of sound with an optima battery and never had any problems. Headlight dimming WILL occur on bass hits, but with *only* headlights, you're far from electrical strain. The only thing you have to worry about is blowing a fuse, which has never happened with me running overwattage bulbs (in the headlights -- the corner lights are a different story)

I will be selling my harness upgrades that I got from SUVLIGHTS . As soon as my Hanabi get here it's for sale. I had them for about 5 months on my car. I also had harness upgrades off of ebay but they didn't last long with my nokyas. So make me a reasonable offer if anyone wants it.
