More info than you could ever hop to accumulate from this thread.

Make your own decision. I run Mobil 1 oil and filter.

I'd cross Castrol off that list and consider Redline as well.

Like joaquink posted, that link has enough info to make your heaad spin.

If you read the study in the link posted above you'll find that Castrol's GTX actually outperforms their own Syntec. Syntec is also a Group III or fake synthetic. The others are PAO or polyolester bases which are much better. Considering that Mobil 1 costs less than Castrol in my local Wal-Mart, I see no reason waht so ever to use Syntec. GTX is another story, I'm very happy with that.

I've been using Syntec since my last car, a heavily modded eclipse GSX that was eating oil for breakfast before I switched to synthetic. Since I've been running Syntec in my Max since the 1st oil change is it bad for me to switch to a different brand?. I have 57K on my '97.

I see. Thanks. Man, it's such a pain now...when I see an oil labeled 'synthetic' nowadays I don't know if it's a full syn or a blend or what. What a drag.

What about Pennzoil Synthetic? Is that a good synthetic oil? I know that their regular oils are pretty good....

Synthetic oils have advantages mainly in extremely cold conditions (like starting your car at minus 20) or extremely hot situations, think gridlock traffic, 110 outside, with the AC on. They also do not wear as quickly as conventionals, so they can last longer between oil changes.

Mobil One makes a good synthetic. It is backed by racing successes and is reasonably priced...and the #1 reason why I use it - I get mine from Costco (hehe).
