pros and cons of buying a maxima

my friend is looking in buying a maxima but has to convince his parents that it's the right car... please list your unbiased opinion on why a maxima is a good buy or the negatives of a maxima... he is going to get is a 5-speed none the less so it's between a maxima and a honda accord, years 1998-2000 in both cars... if anyone knows pros and cons for those year accords too please list...

i am pulling for the maxima but we have to convince his parents that it is the right car... and they are particular... they want to know the weakness of each car so please post...

thanks for the help all!

you'll do better just scrolling up and down the first few pages of posts than asking an open-ended question like this.

Short answer: people like the car for personal reasons, usually starting with the engine and price. In general, people like the car but don't like nissan service.

If you're into mods, it is cool because it is different...bad because the aftermarket support is kinda weak.

You can't get a 98-00 Accord V6 in a 5spd manual. The V6 is 4-spd auto only, but you can get a 5spd manual with the 4-cyl. Plus the Accord V6's have a very high number of tranny failures for an import car. It just doesn't hold up all that well. The V6 engine is also a weak econo-tuned sorry excuse for a VTEC engine. A 5spd Maxima will blow any 98-00 Accord right out of the water. This comes from personal experience.

Reliability is about equal.
Dealer service definitely goes to Honda.
Looks are subjective.
The Accord will still hold value better.

Tell him to get a 98-99 Maxima. 5th Gen's suck.

yeah i knew that you could only get the 5speed in the 4 cylinder so that's a big hangup for him... we just need to convince his parents that the maxima is an overall better car... any other negatives to say about the accord? to a parent's perspective...

Not a whole lot negative about a 5-speed Accord, other than the fact it doesn't have a V6.

Honda makes one of the smoothest FWD Manual transmissions out there.

ok well a 1998-1999 maxima 5-spd could pose potential tranny problems. Alot (too many) members have had their differential bearings go bad inside the tranny. You might want to consider that and stick to a 5th gen.

Motor Trend, Road Test, June 1994
"Our tester, a five-speed SE version of this fourth generation of Maxima, produced a blazing 6.6-second 0-60-mph time, and a 15.2-second, 92.4-mph quarter-mile run. Ask us,
and we'll tell you how the Maxima SE will whip the Integra GS-R, and Taurus SHO;
the new Maxima also shows no mercy on its Nissan stablemates: It'll stomp the normally aspirated 300ZX, and drivers of automatic-transmissioned 300ZX Turbos best not be snoozing when the light goes green.
This demure-looking family car is the quickest Japanese sedan available in the States."

if he plans on keeping the car for a while, he should definitely go for the maxima, if its just gonnabe 2-3 years, go for the honda. the maxima is definitely very unique when it comes to styling as well.
