Hey guys, thinking about taking my 96 Max to the track to see what kind of times I can get. Been a manual tranny driver for most of my life (cept for my first altima), so I was wanting some advice on the best launch techniques with an auto. Kinda clueless here, and I don't want to kill this tranny with improper techniques. Ideas?

 

When i use to be an auto , all i did was power break it. That means, when your at the line ready to take off, hold your break down hard, and give it a little gass to where your RPMS are at 2K then when you take off just floor it and let off the break fast.. this helps spin the tires and get the car moving more since autos dont put down as much torque

 

Rev to 5000 RPM in neutral and slam it into drive when the light turns green

 

OW!!!

Don't forget to tip the worker who sweeps up your tranny parts from the starting line after doing that....

 

not funny. DONT take his advise by doing neutral drops.. this will equal a blown auto tranny verry quickly.

 

LOL! Actually I used to do just that(at 3k though) in my first Nissan, a 93 Alt. Tough lil bugger....

K, well I'll play around with that method a bit. I've done that once before, and I noticed my brakes slipping a bit. Guess I have to stand on em pretty hard, huh?

 

If they are sleeping then just give a little less gas

 

i floor the brake and gas on my 2001 and it dont move.... it pretty good to launch
if u guys want to burn rubber try this... go in reverse at about 20mph and pop it straight into drive....do it a ll the time
tranny still working...

 

^ Are you joking?... I read this yesterday and couldn't tell, so I figured I'd ask. If not, are you attempting to destroy your torque converter for any particular reason?

thats cool u can laugh and laugh along with u.....warranty till 72,000 miles..... and relax guys its not an everyday thing i did it like 3 times......

 

1 is enough some times to blow the tranny, 2 is pushing it, 3.... well your lucky you still got it. I know atleast 2 people who have been stupid enough to do that, and 1 of them was lucky enough not to blow the tranny, they also did it around 20mph, but they heard a wierd tickking noise afterwards... the other, well lets just say they are forking out alot of $$$ for new transmission...



Be prepared to get a new tranny, and most likely, it will come after the warranty....

 

Don't listen to this unless you want a blown tranny. The way to do this is like so. Put your foot on the brake and very very very gently put your foot on the gas. The car idles at like 500 rpms so if you put your foot on it it should raise the idle to 1500-1800 rpm and when the light turns green let go of the brake and gently apply the gas with a constant pressure making sure not to floor it. This I believe is called torque braking. Someother people like MaxSpeedSE seem to be giving the right advice. This is the kinda of thing that you have to feel for yourself not something that someone can teach you. I feel the engine on my car and know how hard i can press usually before the torque converter starts to slip and you begin to lose time. Oh and you should only hold the brake and gas tecnique only a couple seconds before the green light so don't be a bonehead and hold it for 30 seconds this should only be applied for 2-3seconds for a reason. I also don't recommend doing this offten just when you really want a good time. Abussing this could cause harm but rarely does.

I was curious to know if the rebuild you did actually make it a lot stronger than it was before?

 

it'll make it last longer for harsh driving/racing and what not.
but no tranny will ever last doing neutral drops. period

 

what I do for my VG is hold at about 1500-1700 rpm (damn automatic) and keep the brake depressed. might try a little higher, but not much.

 

I did a N drop on a cold engine once....and only once.....and killed the reverse in the tranny...went to a bar....car got stolen same night...i guess they noticed there was no reverse and left it somewhere...took my system and stuff...insurance paid for tranny...but ONCE is all it took to kill it...

This is what I do now. First I have OD off drop it down into 1. Power brake (left foot on brakes and right foot rev to about 1500-2000rpm which ever does best for you). Just quickly flip flop feet right before it turns green. Before it gets close to redline or where it's suppose to shift. Put it into 2nd, but when it's about to shift from 1st to 2nd, feather the gas so It will shift into 2nd quick. then repeat the steps into drive.

but if you have a vb mod you shouldnt have to do this. I am going to bring my car to the track in a few weeks, what im afraid of is when my vb kicks in and the turbo hits full boost will my wheels spin hard then. I havent driven the car since the new turbo yet, but i know i already broke loose between 1st and 2nd

 

VB mod has nothing to do with launch, it helps by making your shifts faster and less likely to slip. Stall the Auto to about 1800 and then let it fly, manual shift and you should run in the high to mid 15s.

 

I f he has a vb mod there is no reason to manually shift because its shifting wuick enough on its own.

 

is the vb mod worth the buck?? does it step it up in accelaration and 1/4 times?
