Windshield Cleaning

Alright guys, my front windshield has very tiny white spots here and there and I can never get rid of them. I scrub very hard when I wash, and afterwards I use the "Auto-Foam Glass Cleaner" and that does not get those miniscule spots off. I want my windshield to be completely perfect, similar to show cars. Any ideas guys?

Also, is it just the fact that those tight a$$ cars at shows just buy brand new windshields or what? Let me know guys, thanks.

I bet you have small dirt/sand dings in your windshield. I have lots of those, makes vision terrible in the setting sun

over here in hawaii they sell some local brand of car products. one is a waterspot remover. it works better than anything else i have tried. I have tried the GSR (Glass Spot Remover) and that sucks. kinda like a compound for glass. also tried no touch glass stripper. it works good, but hard to find a regular size bottle. i was forced to by $2 "sample" packs. sucks paying $2 for one application. this other waterspot remover beats no touch hands down. don't know if you can find anything where you are that compares. although a friend of mine works at a detail shop and if i recall correctly, i believe he said they used acetone. might want to try it on a small spot first.

OK. There's 2 ways to make your windows / windshield really scratch free and super clear:
1. Cheap way
Go out and buy some Meguiars #17 Plastic Polish. It's a very safe & gentle polish. Wash the car and dry the windshield/window. Get a polishing pad or even an old sock and apply polish to the exterior (and interior if you want) of the glass. Keep it up until you've polished the whole surface. Remove the residue with a bath towel. You won't believe how many little scratches and nicks will be polished out and it will feel super-smooth to the touch.
2. The expensive but awesome way:
Buy this kit: http://www.properautocare.com/plaslenclean.html
I bought this to redo my headlight lens covers and discovered that it works unblievably well on the windows. I did my wife's minivan with tinted rear windows and the glass got so smooth & reflective on the outside that you can barely see inside! I did my 99 Maxima (with 100K miles on it) and the windows look like they're rolled down they are so scratch free & clean. Rain slides right off now. I followed the instructions on the page but didn't bother with the Plexus (I did use that on the lenses though).
I actually had to buy more of the Renovo stuff as I used it all up doing my parents cars. That's how much of a difference the stuff makes.

I had very bad water spots on mine when I got it. Used just about every product I could find without any luck. A local glass shop suggested "Duragloss 755 Nu-Glass", and even tested it on my mirror before I bought it (at $12.75/8 oz bottle). Worked perfectly. Basically it's used like any cream polish, and a little goes a long way. I still have 3/4 bottle left. After I got the water spots off, I Rain-X'd all my glass, and I keep them clean to prevent any water spots from forming.
Another old trick is to use a 50/50 mix of white vinegar and water. The vinegar supposedly removes the mineral deposits if they aren't too bad and haven't etched the glass. It's something you can do right when you first notice water spots have formed. Won't work for "aged" water spots. Also works on paint, however, it'll make your wax become "cloudy", so I just use Quick Detailer on my paint.

I've used Bon Ami for years. This is a cleanser like Ajax or Comet but much milder. It doesn't scratch glass. I discovered it at a GM dealer many years ago. They sold a can of it for about $12 with the GM logo. Look at the small print on the can and it says "Bon Ami". Same stuff you get at the grocery store for a buck or two.

I wet the windshield, sprinkle on some Bon Ami and rub in with a soft rag (white athletic sock works great). It should be the consistancy of a runny paste. Then rinse thoroughly with a hose. Takes off all sorts of grime including heavily imbedded bugs.

Let dry and I then apply Rain-X according to the instructions on the bottle. Besides the beading up with water that it provides it also seems to let me get bug guts off easier with a general glass cleaner. I clean off with glass cleaner and apply another coat of Rain-X every 3-4 weeks.

If you do the Bon Ami treatment later you will strip off the Rain-X and have to reapply. However, regular cleaning with glass cleaner and application of Rain-X usually means you don't have to strip back for a long while. I only have to do this again if I've gotten lazy with my Rain-X application.

One thing with Rain-X is leave the windshield wipers up off the glass for a while after application. It tends to make the wipers streaky.

I wouldn't try Bon Ami on the inside of a windshield since some have a plastic coating that would probably be scratched. I'm sure it would destroy any tinting material.

Also, it won't help with pitting or hazing. For that the other posters have what sounds like good suggestions. I would be careful about using Bon Ami in the pre cleaning before any polish because I would worry about some of the cleaner remaining in the pits that you are trying to fill with the polish.
