I'd wait for a few minutes. I didn't, and got a face full of fuel. I'm guessing the canister stored the pressure till' it can work its way back to the tank.

Remove the bottom hose first and it is less likely that fuel will spray everywhere. Plug the hose with your finger to limit amount of lost fuel. I agree that waiting a few minutes from a warm engine, or doing this on a cold engine is best. I have seen several filters changed without removing fuse/cranking engine, etc.

Cold engine. Remove the fuse and start the car. When it dies start it again. Keep doing this until it cranks for 10secs without starting. wrap a rag around the fitting you wish to disconnect. Have a lot of rags ready, and somewhere safe to throw gas-soaked rags. Wear those blue nitrile gloves or your hands will smell of wash-proof gasoline for 6 hours.

(There is no schrader valve on the fuel rail in this car, so you cannot bleed off the last of the pressure that way )
