Hi all....can anyone recommend a good tranny cooler for a 98. Doesn't necessarily have to be the most expensive, just something that is easy to install and does the job. Thanks in advance.

I use Fluidyne cooler. I bought it at AutoZone->

Other people use the one from Pep Boys. Don't remember the brand.

I recommend the Hayden tranny cooler for all of my Valvebody customers (as a matter of fact I insist on a cooler). Increased line pressures will also increase heat. The hayden 404 or 405 is much bigger than called for, but thats the one you want. I would get an extra 4 foot of hose (same size as comes with cooler) and a few (pk of 4) clamps (replace the ****ty stock ones, too).

Use this in addition to the factory cooler.

It should flow like this:

Fluid goes to far side of radiator tank, through factory cooler, out to one side of added cooler, thru cooler, out other side of cooler, back into tranny.

Don't forget to check/add more tranny fluid after your done.

tranny cooler on a 5 speed?

This may be a stupid question but can a tranny cooler like the Hayden be installed on a manual 5 speed? And if so, is the process any different?
With the mods I'm adding to my car I would like the transmission to last as long as possible.

TIA,
Tom

Not on manual. Atleast I don't think so.

The fluid in your manual tranny is a very heavy grade, almost grease like fluid. No a tranny cooler would not work at all due to the fact that the manual makes no pressure for the system to work. Actually your manual will not overheat unless there are no fluids in it, but then your tranny would be trashed. Some people change manual tranny fluid about 60,000 miles, some never touch it. I recommend the earlier, always nice to have clean fluids in all working parts for your car.

Autos use a thinner denser fluid that is pressurized to make other parts work, shifting up and down and what not! The cooler is good for this due to the fact that when this fluid is moving so hard and fast that it gets hot and can burn.

They do have an oil cooler for your motor that is supposed to drop the engine temperature down to 185 degrees from 215 to 225. This don't sound that much, but can make your car run better and will cause less wear on the oil, which in turn puts less wear on the motor parts.

hodgeee,
Thanks for the descriptive answer. It makes a lot of sense now. Great! I'm going to look into the cooler for the oil as you mentioned. Thanks again!

tke148...mind if I ask what type of muffler you have?

It stated in your sig that you have a universal muffler. I am in the market for a muffler, mine is about to die. I was looking around for a performance looking (polished) not straight through muffler. (if they exist) and have not found one yet. Still looking. I am worried about noise so I have stayed away from the Greddy etc... I have been to speed shops that claim they have them but all seem to end up being staright thr = noise. I have the Stillen intake and y and plan on getting the Courtesy b-pipe. So I think I have enough noise that I can tolerate.
Thanks

Re: tke148...mind if I ask what type of muffler you have?

Barrynyc,
The muffler I got was a used muffler I bought from someone. They had it installed on thier maxima and when they "up graded" to a stillen performance, he sold me his.
It is indeed a straight through and gives a nice soft grumble when the rest of the exhaust is stock. But since I've had it I have installed a CAI, SS Y-pipe and RT cat. Now it's a little too loud for me so I'm going to take it off and put the stock muffler back on to quiet things down.
I doubt I would put it back on anymore.
The performance muffler only gives about 3-5hp so i figure it's worth it to get rid of the noise. But it does give a nice grumble at WOT. Plus my girlfriend doesn't like it loud, she gives me these looks like I'm death; if you know what I mean.

I know exacthly what you mean. I'm married and I know the looks. My wife is pretty cool though, she has tolerated a lot up to this point. I think I am the one who does not want the car any louder. BTW, how's the SS y-pipe. IS it quiet compared to the STillen. Have you heard the Stillen?
Thanks

Re: Re: Re: tke148...mind if I ask what type of muffler you have?

Barrynyc,
I've only had the SS Y on the car for about a week now and I have to say I really like the increase in power. I have the cali-emissions set-up on my car. I thought at first I had the federal emissions so I ordered that pipe. When I started to install it I realized it was wrong so I had to get another from Cattman. Now, I have to return the first pipe to them...kind of a pain because I have to spend more money for shipping it back to them...oh well.
I really can't say how it differs from the stillen in sound but the quality of Cattman's SS really is good. It has very nice and clean welds and fits well also. The hardest part was getting the old bolts off without breaking any of them...
But it's all good.

Anything else i can help you with?
