How come turbo cars are faster than they are supposed to be?
It seems like turbo cars are faster than NA cars with similiar power ratings. The new WRX runs to 60 in 6.1 seconds!!!
What is going on? it has only 230 hp and 217 lb of torque, so how in the world can it do 0-60 in 6 seconds?
Don't you need at least 260 hp to do it?
And the VW GTI too. It's dyno numbers are almost identical with the Civic SI, and I've driven both. Well, the GTI feels faster. In the May issue of SCC, they had a shoot out between the Si and the GTI, and the accleration numbers are identical. But when you drive it, the GTI feels faster. It definitely pushs you into the seat harder!!
I want a turbo so bad!
When the boost comes on, OH MY GOD!! there is nothing like it.
And the Eclipse GST too. It's power rating and 0-60 times are similiar to a Maxima, but when you drive it, it feels faster than the Maxima. Eclipse gives you that "glued to the seat" feeling. It feels like it pushes me into the seat harder than my 2k 5-speed.
Why?? Is our senses being fooled?
I don't really think so. I think turbos really are faster than NA cars with same power figures.

It's becauce a small turbo...as these cars are equipped with...spools up faster and thus peaks torque very early(~2500rpm) and therefore is stronger of the line...but still has the cpabilities to get to 60 faster than n/a cars with similar power ratings.

well, the Suburau is AWD so you can do a hard launch. As for Turbo cars feeling faster. its prolly cause boost its more suddenly therefore giving you the kick feeling and making it seem faster. An NA car the power curve is more linear so may not feel as fast..
It's all about the grip. God bless AWD
Besides,so what if it had only 230hp? It has a better power to weight ratio than a mere 250hp Audi S4, which hits 60 in 5.6, so the WRX might be even FASTER
In the end, that's what it's all about:
Grip and power/weight

I got the same feeling once I dropped my S/C into my car...instant torque feels good...but still was only as fast my V6 Camry...but not anymore...muahahaha

And dont forget gearing...... gear ratios play a big part in acceleration when the above mentioned grip and power/weight ratio is all factored in.
