Which suspension parts are essential?

Hi All,

I have a very tragic situation for you. I've got a 95 SE with about 140k miles on it in the driveway with a pretty worn suspension. I also have a set of KYB AGXs, H&Rs, KYB Dustboot/Bumpstops, and some isolation wrap which have been sitting in my garage for about ten months now. Makes you want to cry doesn't it? Last summer I ran into the problem of getting about 10 different lists of essential parts needed for the replacement, e.g. bearings, mounts, spacers, seats, etc. along with multiple part numbers for each. While I was trying to figure out what I needed, the funds ran out and winter came.

I've recenently come into some money that I've earmarked for the operation and can't stand having my unused suspension in the garage any longer. I figure with 140k on the stock parts, I will prolly need to replace almost everything, so I was hoping that those of you who know could do me a big favor and compile a list of the essential parts, along with part numbers and where to get them (Courtesy, wherever). Thanks in advance!

Have: KYB AGXs, H&Rs, KYB dustboots, iso wrap
Need: ??? (please help!)

All I replaced were the strut mounts and bearings. Sometimes you cannot tell if a part is bad til you pull it, but ordering the parts from Courstey and having them on hand is much easier than having to run to the dealership to get bent.

Thanks for the suggestions. I am planning on getting new mounts for front and rear also. Does anyone know the part numbers for the front and rear mounts? Or if anyone could post a link to where the part numbers could be found. I remember that at one point there was a schematic of the assemply posted, but without the search, I can't find it. Any help would be appreciated.

Absolutely most important part of your suspension. Good tires.

What's needed? I would say the strut bearings need to be replaced if the car has more than 50,00 miles. Tires should always have more than 20% tread (they are the most important factory in your car's handling characteristics).

What's nice? New strut mounts, high-performance tires.

Get the Motivational rear mounts if your dropping your car. They really make a big differance in ride quality.

i would get nothing. I spent over 180 bucks on replacing every little rubber and plastic thing you can think of. If you do a search you might be able to find the thread I created. This was a year ago. I had 185,000 miles and all the parts looked great, except for the dust boots. I even had a friend who is a former lexus and bmw technician look at the parts I replaced while I was doind the job and agreed I wasted my money. good luck. just get those things on and you'll love it.

I don't suppose you still have a list of those parts and or part numbers? I don't like the idea of replacing anything I don't need to, but I've been driving on worn shocks for a while. I like the idea of not being prepared to replace something that needs it even less though. If any member "can" search and wouldn't mind posting the link, I would appreciate it... or perhaps if someone could verify that it is in fact still there, I would consider becoming a donating member. Thanks.

When I did it, I only replaced the dust boots and live to regret it. year and a half out, one strut mount crumbled and left one of my Kumho tires crying in its wake. To make matters worse, the top piston rod nut on my Koni insert would not come off so it too was sacrificed and replaced.

Were I to do it again: new strut mounts, strut bearings, isolation coil wraps, and new bolts/nuts (steering knuckle)--all OEM. It doesn't pay to reuse and have to redo things a year or two later.
