size of tranny cooloer for auto ?

I went to the local parts store to see what was available for tranny coolers. He asked how much i was towing ? I said i wasn't towing anything but more for extending the life of the tranny.

I have 2 choices so far :

#1 - designed for towing 12000 lbs - measures 7.5x15x3/4 ($70 can)

#2 - designed for towing 20000 lbs - measures 7.5x20x3/4 ($86 can)

I've read somewhere to use rubber hose that is compatible with auto trans oil.

My questions are:

- Is it possible to have too much cooling ?

- Should i still use the stock rad cooler too ?

- What is best todo in the winter time ?

Typical temperatures this car will be exposed to are

Winter : -15 to -20 degrees C (13 to -4 F)
summer : 10 to 35 deg C (48 to 95 F )

Driving : 35 minute commute to work 100kph(60mph) no major long hills

I plan on making some brackets to support the cooler instead of mounting through rad/a/c cond. Will take some time but better than no a/c

Thanks for any input and suggestions.

Martin

yes you will still use the radiator, it will go transmission->radiator->cooler->transmission

if you get the b&m it has some kind of bybass that regulates the temp of the fluid to make sure only the stuff that is the right temp goes to the tranny. ive heard that most places dont get that cold.

not sure about the size i have the name and size of my cooler at my parents house and i can check it when i go there on monday after noon if you dont get a response by then.

good luck

go to www.jegs.com, and look for b&m hitec cooler for $42.xx i think its for 12,000 pounds. i few members on this board have it. i believe it comes with a falve that regulates the flow while the ATF is cold.

I've heard of the coolers with the bypass valve before. How reliable have these valves been ? It would seem if the valve went bad it may take out the tranny.

I read a writeup somewhere about the tranny cooler install but can't recall where. If anyone knows a link please post.

Thanks , martin

Go to Crappy Tire and get the largest one they sell. It is a 24000 GVW B&M with MotoMaster written on it. I have 2 of them now, one in each car and have used one for 2 years and they are great.

There is no valve, it is actually an orifice that restricts the flow when cold to prevent too much flow in cold weather. You can't get too large of one because it does bypass and will not hurt performance.

dmbk - you make a good point. I've been thinking what to put in the 3rd hole of the 3 guage pod. For the other 2 i'm going with oil press and batt. Idiot lights are well.... as the name imply's I call them too late lights.

jime - you must be canadian (slang term for canaian tire). How does the orfice work ?

I got 282km on my 88 beretta that had a cooler put on it early in life. No tranny complaints yet.

Thanks.

Marty my understanding is that it works in somewhat the same fashion as you coolant thermostat. It expands under heat and contracts when cooler opening and closing the orifice.

You are living in a good part of the country and have a great birthday date (same as mine).

Watch out for the Ogopogo, he is faster than a Maxima.

jime - do you have a part number at can tire ? I went there this morning to have a look. The one i looked at was for 24000 and was a motormaster. No mention of the check valve in the instructions or on the box. I asked him if this was the only motomaster units can tire sells. He said yes but anybody who's been to can tire knows it's possible they have no idea what there talking about.

Maby a pic ?

Thanks , martin

Well I have a Hayden 404 tranny cooler on my 88 maxima. I dont know the specs but I do know that it would be used for RVs or Trucks Pulling Large boats.Which to me if it can cool those trannies its workin wonders on mine. I dont think it has the bypass valve but its been doin its job since Ive installed it. I recommend it even if your car isnt modded.
