Tire recommendations
I am going to need new tires before the fall. I need something that can handle decently and is quiet on the highway. These tires also need to useable in snow because when I go to school (Appalachian), it tends to snow alot so all-seasons are kinda what i'm looking at (I'd rather not do all-out snow tires though). I've been researching www.tirerack.com and the two tires I've been most interested in are the Bridgestone Turanza LS-H and the Continental ContiExtremeContact tires. Anyone out there have any experience with these tires? I had Michelin MXV4 Plus tires on my last car and the seemed to be a good all-around tire (besides treadwear), but they are pricey for what you get. Any input is helpful. By the way, these will most likely be mounted on 5-star 97-99 SE rims if I can get some, so the size would be 215/55-16 if I am not mistaken...
I've put about 1500 miles on my Continental ContiExtremeContacts. I do like them so far. I came from a Toyo (FZ4, I think?) in the stock 215/55/16. They were the only tires I've had on the Max, so they are the only thing I really have to compare against. The Toyos at 40,000 miles still had tread left, but were starting to hydroplane badly in heavy rain. I got the Continentals in 225/55/16 (for various reasons) for my stock SE wheels. I've got nothing to complain about so far. They seem to handle and ride just as well as the Toyos. I've been in some heavy rain a couple of times so far, and felt completely in control at 80mph. Only time will tell how they do as far as wear. I thought about spending more money on something like the Bridgestone Potenza RE950 or the Michelin Pilot Sport A/S, but couldn't justify the cost at this time since I rack up a lot of highway miles (plus suspension mod is next!). I usually think you get what you pay for, but I haven't been disappointed so far. I might opt for the Michelins when I wear these out just to see how they compare.
Try Dunlop SP Sport A2 in 215/55/16 or 225/50/16 or Sumitomo HTR+ in 225/50/16 or Dunlop RE950 in one of those sizes.
All are all-season and org tested and approved. My Sumitomos were fine in the DC show (LOTS, this winter). I think that you will be fine @ Appy state w/ good all-season performance tires.
