I drove an '04 maxima auto with fake tiptronic. it was pathetic. I hit the gas in first and it auto shifted into second before the rev limiter in tiptronic mode! What's this?! what's the point in having tiptronic type shifting if the transmission is going to shift itself anyway? I drove a Hyundai sonata LX with fake tiptronic and it was actually not bad... fun even. it sure didn't shift itself before hitting the rev limiter.

Seems to me that my '03 SE auto shifts faster/crisper than the '04 5-speed auto, it would be a good candidate for tiptronic-type shifting in my opinion. does anyone know of an on-wheel shift kit for the maxima? buttons or paddles maybe?

the same gear box is used on teh G35 and i rememeber not havinig any problem shifting at redline

 

yeah, the g35 wont upshift unless you tell it too though, hrmmm

 

The G35 gearbox isnt even close to the 04 maxima's. The transmission is a completely different shape. Also, the programming is different too. If the maxima's tranny let you shift at the cutoff, it would chirp its tires real bad, and have no control.

 

my gramps Passat has a good tiptronic tranny...too bad the rest of the car is ****

Ah, care to name any Porsche cars that share parts with any VWs? Hmm maybe if the Cayenne shares some parts off the Toureg. I guess Nissan = Renault Mazda = Ford Jaguar = Ford Chrysler = Mercedes Benz Audi = VW Lanborgini = whomever owns them at the moment VW was goning after BMW at some point also. Bugatti is also owned by one of the big 3???


Triptronic is not that great. It's still based on a torque convertor automatic transmission. Nothing really different than just manually shifting.

Automatic shifters based on clutch actuated manuals are a different story. Ala Ferrari and I think BMW M3 SMG?

 

hmm...let's look back in time at the 944/924...both VW engines...

VW makes and owns Porsche....this has been the case since WWII with Mr. Adolf Hitler.....If you remember the images of Mr. Hitler riding around in his army jeeps, they were produced by Porsche of whom was later discovered Hitler had owned part of.

 

What VW used the 924/944 engines? And again, what are you implying by equating VW with Porsche?? You trying to say Porsche is some kind of cheap make or something?? Considering the last 944 was made close to 10 years ago, that's a pretty good stretch. The only VW motor to directly share engines with VW that I know of was back in the 60's w/ the 356 speedster series and the late 70's 914.

And what does it matter if VW owns Porsche? What does that have to do with triptronic transmissions?

I think what he is trying to say is VW is behind some great cars so to say VW is crap is not entirely true. At least that is what I think I read.

1) It's not

sake of accuracy, the 924 was indeed a VW design and built in a VW plant, not so the 944...it was a true Porsche

IMHO, the 944 Turbo continues to be one of the nicest sports/GT cars of that era....250-plus HP, 0-60 sub 5.5 seconds...for the price, one of the great cars of the era

as I recall the 924 was originally to be marketed by VW--perhaps as a gen2 scirocco.

Why do you refer to tiptronic as a "technology"? it is nothing more that a sequential front end on a standard automatic. I wouldn't mind a set of up/down buttons on the wheel of my '03 SE--thrustmaster tyle.
