Is the stock muffler really that free flow???
Is the stock muffler really that free flow???
so i put my stock muffler on cause my other muffler was giving me a headache (droned too much) and i kno the stock muffler is supposed to give u better low end, but even when i gun'd it, the car felt a lil more sluggish than usual... or maybe its the 90 degree weather here in NY.
anybody have dyno proof or anything between a free flow and stock 5th gen muffler? this is so i kno its not just a mental thing with the noise + power dealy

I know the look of the tips between the 3.0 and the 3.5 is different. My '03 muffler has double tips, and all the 2000-2001's I've seen have the single oval tip.
I'm not saying that the newer one is more high-flow (although I've heard that said many times on this board)... but they certainly don't appear to be the same part... which would mean that they did change the muffler.

Hey FrankTheBunny, the 2001 have also dual tips, it's just that it have a chrome metal thingy that surround both tips. Take a good look from close and you'll see what I'm saying.

Flowmasters are the best COMPROMISE imo, but NO STRAIGHT THROUGH muffler is going to be anywhere near "extremely quiet", if that's what your referring to by "free flow muffler".

Well from what I've learned tonight ours is probably the freest flowing stock muffler in the Max's price class. Although it's not what I would call "that free flow".
I will say the construction of it is just plain amazing. What a thorough job Nissan has done building this thing, it should last and last.
The valve inside is much bigger than I expected. That and I'm not so sure there is any thing that can be done to improve flow in any way. Larry's Mod of adding a 2.5" pipe only bypasses the valve, so there is no real gain there.

i think for the 4th gens, the apexi ws catback is quiet... what if i took that muffler and put it on my car.
You think it would b quiet with the ypipe and straight thru 2.5 pipe w/o a resonator

With your 2001 I would get the Y-pipe, if you haven't, then take your Max to a muffler shop that has a mandrel bender and have a custom exhaust done from the cat back. Put a large resonator (22") on it and get a Flowmaster, Magnaflow or Dynomax muffler.
If you have a B-pipe already you can have a large resonator put in it. From what I've been seeing lately this is the key to keeping the drone down.
