Catalytic question

My SES light turned on and I found out that my cat converter is shot when I took it for service. I'm sure it was true since I had some misfire problems before and still drove the car for about 6 months. It must've superheated the converter and F'd it up. I priced a new cat from Nissan ($772 Courtesy Nissan). Should I just replace the converter with a high flow from Cattman ($200)and replace the rear O2 sensor to save me some money? Will it still cause the SES light to come on? I need to have the Maxima pass NJ inspection. Thanks in advance.

Interesting point. I am having the same problem with my '01. It'sat the dearler now. Well to begin, you have 8/80 warranty on the cat if that helps. Regardless of what lies the dealer feeds you- it is a federal law, look in your manuel- I think capter 9. Also, you can call 800 nissan1. They will TELL your dealer to do it free, including the 02 sensor. To answer the second part of your question, and I think you know the answer, stock is best when it comes to sensitive things like this. Never go with universal 02 sensors. Although Cattman sells the part and probably warranties it, the labor is not cheap. You have to ask yourself why did it go bad in the first place. Definitely check out the rer sensor. Also be aware there is a TSB (technical service bulleten) on Maximas that says in most cases when the ses light is on, you need to re-flsh the ECU with updated software. Sometimes it is just a glitch and neither the 02 or the cat. Rest assured thoug, if it is the cat, you are 100% covered under federal emmisions law for 8/80 no questions about it.
