taking your tail lamps apart
taking your tail lamps apart
a friend of mine told me to submerge the lamps in a pot of boiling water for about 5 min. to loosen up the glue. havent tried it yet though. im hoping someone here knows a little more or has a better suggestion or a link to tell me where to go.

Dont put them in boiling water unless you want to melt them. The correct way is to use a heat gun, or put them in the oven. www.vqpower.com has a how to and so does www.maximadriver.com

done!
got all four light apart, oven works best, dont even bother with the heat gun! put it in for about 5 min. @ 250F and use a small thin screwdriver to carefully pry the lenses off. next im going to repait the inside with a nice silver and put them back together, minus the orange and white lenses. a little practice when it comes to taking my gen2s apart.

LOL! You have got to be one of the funniest guys that has ever uttered speech. Thanks for the laugh, and I hope you were joking even though it's obvious that you weren't.
Boiling water melting plastic? LOL! Boiling water at standard pressure is 100 degrees Celcius. Unless you are deeper into the Earth than is humanly possible at the moment, the water will never reach a temperature that is capable of melting the plastic. In fact, the plastic is infinetly more likely to melt with the heat gun or oven, LITERALLY. Why you say? Because there is absolutely 0% chance of the lights melting with boiling water, while there is always a chance of melting with a heat gun or oven.
***The boiling water method guaruntees no melting***
Another benefit to the water method is the significantly higher specific heat capacity of water over air. It's significantly higher specific heat capacity means you transfer heat MUCH more effectively with water than with air. And because the water itself cannot exceed 100 degrees Celcius at standard pressure (and realistically cools to closer to 90 degrees Celcius the moment you pour it over the light), you'll never be able to melt the plastic.
The only danger with the water method is making sure you get all the water out of there afterwards.

As for the boiling water method, as long as you boil 4L of water for two outter tail lights, pour the water over the lights in a large sink, wait 2-3 minutes . . . then you'll have no problems. Just make sure you boil enough water, and that's it.
