Problem with transmission?? Help!

I was wondering if there is something wrong with my transmission in around 3rd gear.

When I gas on my max, 97 GLE stock auto, it accelerates nicely through first and second gear. But right when it shifts to third and the RPM drops to about 4k, the accelerating stops! The RPM bar stays at around 4K, not going up steadily unlike 1st and 2nd gear even though I've never taken my foot off the pedal! After its stuck for about 2-3 seconds, the RPMs slowly climb again. Could this be something wrong with the car?
Someone recommended me getting new spark plugs / oil change / fuel cleaner but i don't think the problem lies there. Any help would be appreciated, if this is an actual problem at all, although I think it is because isnt the RPM supposed to rise continuously ?

During a race with a friend, right when i notice the car shifting into 3rd, he just flies past me ridiculously even though i pull ahead at around 2nd gear.

Sounds like you have some major power loss. When was the last time your car was serviced? Tune up time, plugs, air filter, fuel filter PCV valve ect...
