just went to track, i have a need for speed?

i just got back from the track, the best i ran was a 17.04@ 82mph. i have a 1991 vg auto. i have intake, exhaust, advanced timing. would adding a Ur udp help break me into the 16s? how bout adding a hi-flow cat, 2.5 catback piping, and i know the y-pipe helps. could i take my car to an exhaust shop and get them to cut the pre-cats out and replace those areas with straight through pipe?

i hate that my car is so slow

what is the stock 1/4 mile time?

3rd gens don't have pre-cats. UDP and Y-pipe and full exhaust will definently help...with intake I ran a 16.86 after the Y-pipe I got it down to a 16.1--. The Y-pipe is the great equalizer!

but you should beable to break 16s with just intake. advanced timing didn't help me much, I ran better times at 15*...if anything don't advance past 17*. but yeah the GXE is pretty slow without some major mods, ECU helps out a lot too!

Your car is gonna be pretty slow unless you drop the money on at least the y pipe and then the ECU. I'm gonna take my timing back to stock, I never really felt anything so why bother?

Mess with the free stuff. I ran a 16.346 with no mods at all in my 94 GXE automagic. Take the spare, jack, other heavy stuff out of the car. Learn how to use tire pressure to your advantage, ie. put it at around 20 psi in the fronts and the max in the rears. Check simple things like how tight your throttle cable is. Do the preventative maintenance, like PCV valve, tune up, oil change. Transmission fluid flush. Learn how to launch your automatic. When I leave the line I'm usually at 2500 RPM. This involves two feet, one on each the gas and the brake. You don't want to do this for longer than 5 seconds or so because it's terrible for the transmission, but going fast means breaking stuff. When you stage at the lights, stage shallow, which means just barely trip the second staging light. This gives you a few extra inches to travel before untripping the light and starting the counter. Simple things like that will get you more involved with the car and racing in general.

That's the thing though, you aren't going fast

After I went to the track and found out my times, I find it hard to even want to drive fast now.

Could you post your full time slip? I'd bet money that your 60' is at least a 2.5-2.6. You gotta get that down if you want to run faster times.

what track...do you know the elevation? judging by your trap speed you should have run upper 16's. like paul said your 60' had to have been in the mid 2's.

I/Y/E i ran low 16's and with ECU it has only gotten better

i went to alabama international dragway(steele)
elevation was 500 feet
my best time
r/t >> 1.434
60ft >> 2.542
330ft >> 7.198
1/8 >> 11.012
1/8 mph >> 65.07

1/4 >> 17.044
1/4 mph >> 80.80

this was my first run and my 2nd and 3rd only got slower( 17.223 @ 79.97, 17.231 @ 79.72)

so if the 3rd generation doesnt have precats then what does the y-pipe do? just bigger piping?madrel bent?

which of these mods should i do first? udp?y-pipe?b-pipe?hi-flow cat?

which one will help the most?

is that guy still doing the valvebody mod for the auto transmissions?

sorryfor so many questions but i HAVE to get faster

Your 60' time is horrible, I hope you didn't do a burnout or anything like that in the water box. Also did you let the car shift on its own or did you manually shift it? I found that I had better results by shifting myself. Then I had a better launch by flash stalling the car vs brake torquing. Flash stalling is when your sitting at idle while the car is staged, once the 2nd yellow comes on then you bring the engine to your launch speed (mine was 1400-1500rpm) and release the brake while hitting the gas. All this should happen in less than a second and give you a better launch.

Next time you go remove all the subs/amps and/or spare tire + jack if possible. However given it's your first time you should be able to get the car back to 16.7-16.9s with no other mods. I recommend that you hold 1st gear till around 6000-6100rpm and do 2nd gear around 6000rpm. When you advanced your timing did you put the ECU in diagnostic mode III? I found that the ecu doesn't lock in timing mode unless it is in mode III and you rev the engine over 3000rpm 3 times.

Very true. I must have been thinking about the DSM I've been wanting to buy when I was talking about going fast and breaking stuff. Anyways, check out my website for my four timeslips from my first and only time at the track.

As for the trap speeds being low, it was generally accepted that Edgewater's trap speeds were around 2 mph slower than they should be last summer. This was verified by the many mustang owners with mullets who race at the two different tracks in town and know their stuff.

i give up there is nothing short of nos or turbo that i can do to make my car fast. i will just stick with my intake , exhaust and advanced timing. i have been going the show route most of the time but i got sucked into the go part, speed is not cheap. show is a lot cheaper.thanks for yalls help though

How fast are you wanting to go? Remember ET is a large function of traction or lack there-of. Being an auto doesn't help nor does weighing around 3200-3400lbs race weight either. I'm thinking bolt ons + 100hp nitrous could get a VG into the 13s. It would have the power/weight ratio but it would need enough traction to do it.
