ok but im not really sure what the difference between the both is, how can you tell by just looking at the inside of the muffler tip? do straight through mufflers sound deeper than regular? are the flowmaster series straight through and how does it sound with a stock y-pipe?

whenever you look into the muffler you should be able to look right through it hence the name "straight through muffler". now flowmasters are chambered. all universal mufflers are straight through.

straight through muffler is just like the way it's named: the gas go into one end and straight through the other with no restriction. you can see right through them. any straight through muffler are louder than stock. most also drone at crusing speeds.

don't know about flowmasters, never heard one on a max before.

straight-thru types are just that. they are not chambered for sound muffling. your stock y-pipe is fine with muffler upgrade. but to take advantage of a straight-thru, go ahead and change the y-pipe, if nothing else. muffler swap will not matter much without y-pipe swap. and be prepared to get loud. if you hate loud, then keep stock muffler and only swap y-pipe. y-pipe will free up a little hp, car will seem a little more "alive," and you will still hear the rumble as you cannot escape y-pipe influence. muffler swap alone generally will be only for aesthetics compared to what you get with y-pipe/straight thru combo.

were i you, i'd save clams and do the entire exhaust system all at once. like $800. some folks on here swap out entire exhaust and then go with a stock 5th gen muffler for looks, performance, and sound dampening.

i have magnaflow dual tipped. some on here have flowmaster.

when a muffler is chambered then when you look on the inside of the tip you can see like little holes everywhere and those holes are suppose to break up the sound so it will be more quieter

actually chamber muffler use plates i beleive.

Straight through muffler use a tube with buncha holes in it with fiberglass or other sound absorbing material sandwiched between the tube and the muffler casing. the chamber muffler reflects the sound pulses back and forth between those plates to help cancel the noise.

Complete 2.5" mandrel bent exhaust system is under $600

Warpspeed Y-pipe $200
Warpspeed B pipe w/res $170
Discount for bying both -$ 20
Warpspeed HiFlow Cat $100
Eldelbrock RPM muffler $ 80
Nice Tip for muffler $ 45

BTW, I haven't mounted it yet, but the RPM muffler is sort of a strange beast. It's not quite a straight through. It actually has one center entry, then splits into two channels inside the muffler. Then each channel bends towards the edge of the case and then rejoin just before exiting the case in the center. It's supposed to give big flow with less noise. We'll see as soon as the Warpspeed B pipe gets here.

I'm also thinking of getting the Metal substrate Cat instead of the Carsound. Anybody else using the Metal Substrate?
