Changed coolant - only put 1/2 gallon back in?!
Changed coolant - only put 1/2 gallon back in?!
Hey all,
I changed my coolant today per the owners and Haynes manual (except for the 2 bolts in the block). Everything went well until I went to put the new antifreeze in - I could only fit about 1/2 gallon into the radiator which is much less than the ~2 gallons I expected.
Here was my procedure:
1. Open drain plug in bottom of radiator, let coolant drain, replace plug.
2. Fill radiator with water from hose.
3. Loosen and remove top of upper radiator hose to expel coolant/water.
4. Run Max up to operating temp and let coolant/water drain upper radiator hose until water was clear.
5. Stop filling rad with water and let the engine run until no more water was coming out of the upper rad hose (while keeping an eye on the temp guage).
6. Fill rad with 1/2 gal. of water and run max for 20 minutes. Filled reserve too.
7. Let Max cool for about 4 hours. There was no need to top off coolant b/c it was at the same level.
Did I miss something? I'm thinking there may be some water left from step 5, but I wouldn't think it would be 1.5 gallons.
Any ideas?
Thanks for the help,
Phil

"except for the 2 bolts in the block."
The rest was in the coolant passages in the engine, and to properly flush your coolant you should have flushed this area too.
There was no need to top off after 4 hours because the engine was already full.
Naughty, naughty...
