Crappy gas mileage..help me out

i get about 16-17 mpg on the average. its not good at all..just took it to autozone today and they scanned it. got the error code 402 for the catalytic convertor. i have a 2000 max with only 31,000 miles on it..i dont think its the cat. and a buncha other codes came out but they were all related to the tranny.. i got the 5 speed swap with a auto ecu. solenoids and some other stuff. so its just the code 402..
im getting iridium spark plugs soon and i gotta change my pcv or whatever.
maybe its my air filter??
im just lost

EDIT: and no..i dont beat on my car either

I'm a big fan of the air cleaner--it seems to make a huge diff. in the winter and on the highway--dirty filter can cause only 23-24 on the highway in the winter. But I think it means less in the summmer and in city driving. Are you getting 16-17 in all city driving? If so, no biggie. But if you can take her out for about a straight 100 mile cruise and you still get that low, yes, something is wrong. Cheap way to find out, just buy a new factory filter. I don't recommend K&N, which is what I got.

how do you clean your TB with the TB spray cleaner?

do you take the air filter off and spray it into the TB while the car is running?

great write up here
i picked up a can of intake cleaner for like 3.25. it said it had synthetic cleaners, which i am not sure of but it worked like a charm. from what i can remember, it was made by valvoline.
