5th gen tranny

We'll after a few initial buying mistakes everything's in and running well.
My '97 now has a 5sp 2001 Anniversary edition VLSD tranny.

Big thanks Dave Burnette @ Southpoint for verifying parts and getting me the unit, gears, & synchro's. Thanks SprintMax for the FSM info. Thanks Frank at motorvate.ca for rebuild help. Also thank you to everybody who posted suggestions about it swapping in and the stronger gears. As expected a new drivers side driveshalf was all that was needed and everything fit together fine.

Originally I thought I had found a used '98 VLSD unit through a salvage yard. What they delivered turned out to be an automatic so that went back.

Nothing else turned up < $600 for a while and I expanded the search to include 2000 and 2001 units. Those were even more expensive. Not to mention the preload and shim measurements problems that would probably bite me on a used unit. For peace of mind a rebuild would probably be better - but geez that's getting expensive.

DaveB calls me a couple months later. "Hey, I've got a $200 tranny that needs some work. You interested?". Turned out every gear and synchro needed replacing and they were different than the 4th gen.

All that was left was a drivers side half-shaft. Hey Marty @ Raxles - can you help me? No cores anywhere. Even the Carquest network couldn't come up with one. No way I was gonna pay $400+ for a new one either. Couple weeks later one did show up on car-part.com. Got that one rebuilt and the rest is history.

First drive was impressive. Turning starts from a dead stop I couldn't break the tires loose on dry pavement (large 235/45/17's). On rain they broke loose more easily but a bit later than with the open diff. I had no idea what I was missing. 7/20 I run my next event with the lighter 16" rubber and we'll see what it really takes to break em loose.

Also, I'll be selling my original tranny shortly if anybody's looking for a 5sp swap. Great by itself - deadly combined with a Phantom, Vitek, or Quaife.

sweet. glad to see everything went together real well. if my tranny ever goes I'm going to keep an eye out for a '00-'01 tranny.

VLSD owns you. glad my max already came with it though.

VLSD performance update

Update - ran 9 autox runs yesterday.

Starts - still haven't found the exact RPM to dump from but 2000-2500 rpm slipping the clutch was just ok. I think it can go higher w/o terrible wheel hop.

Acceleration - there was a nice 0-65mph winding start and once I got comfortable with the grip I kept it flat out til the first turn. Got a little bit of chattering as I unloaded each side but she kept pulling in the right direction. Hard on the brakes I heard something strange like a soft clunk but that could've been anything.

Sweepers - really shined here. At first I pushed it too hard and that car pushed beyond the limits of tire grip. At only 80%-90% throttle it carved much better - no squealing, just pulling through.

Slaloms - I was worried about locking up and not disengaging like some Miata drivers reported but it never happened. Just grip anytime I needed (within the boundries of the suspension loading)

Harpin turn - thing of beauty here. Slowed to like 10-15mph, pivot, then WOT no wheelspin, just pulled me through.

On the way there's one large S curve piece of farmroad. I still let off at 100mph but the difference was the secure feeling that there was more speed to be found. The car felt more planted and sure of it's footing.

Can't wait til winter

BEJAY1,

Is the "track" (distance from side to side) on the 4th Generation 5spd Maxima a different measurment from the 5th Generation 5spd Maxima..

I found an open diff 5th Gen 5spd Tranny...

Now one more question..on the front of the tranny everything is the same ?? where the lines hook up, the starter, and all the sensors and stuff all the same ?? I will be ordering this on Monday So I want to be 100% SURE it will fit..its coming with a Drivers side axle too

Any pictures of the top of the tranny ?? should be exact to the 4th gen//Right ??

yes i'd like to know the answers to matty's questions also. i wouldn't mind swapping in a 5th gen 5 speed into my 4th gen if it fits like a 4th gen tranny would.

I assume the track is the same but perhaps DaveB or somebody could verify. I do know it just dropped in and the shop that installed had no problems at all. We swapped in the 5th gen drivers side halfshaft and all was good. Sorry no pics before the install. I didn't even see it before it went in.

Tom is the mgr @ Certified Transmission (630) 289-6411. One of his techs did the actual work back in May 2003.
