This guy is saying it will be illegal to sell HID kits after August 15. This does not affect OEM.

This will really affect us NY/NJ owners if this happens. Our cars will be hit so often it will only be much worse.

Can you imagine the increase in thefts of our HIDs after this goes into effect? If people are stealing them now, just imagine when they can't buy them

I think we should seriously ban together and call our congressmen or who ever is repsonsible and register a formal complaint. I'm upset that I can't buy an after market kit (for my other car) but more importantly the thefts are going to sky rocket.

Thats complete crap. Theres no laws on the books, nor are there any in the works to "ban" HID lighting on automobiles.

 

I looked on NHSTA/DOT website (and it's not NHSTA, it's NHTSA... maybe just a typo) and didn't see anything on this.

Before anyone gets his panties in a wad how about we wait and see if he replies with the source of the info... there's just as much of a chance he's going out of business and is trying to sell off all his inventory.

 

I have read this, and while there is no "fact" to whats going on, I thought I clear up what "I" read.

* First HIDs are not being banned
* RETROFITTED Kits seem to be the topic at hand
* OEM seems to be ok.
* Yes, if its proven that this is going to happen, HIDs in ANY car are going to be gone in a matter of seconds now.

Do we have someone in a govt position that can look up what upcoming proposed laws are going to be voted on? The only way to solve this is get FACT. Not make general assumptions and speculations.

 

They will still be sold, but they will have that "For Off Road Use Only" just like the rice snake eyes.

 

There has been some issues with conversion kits getting out of control. Were talking about the 8000K blinding blue kits that some law makers want to make illegal to sell. They are illegal to use and you can get a ticket, but they want to go one step further and make them illegal to actually sell a kit thats not DOT approved. That will limit the light color to approved specs which I believe is around 4300K - 4800K. Have you ever had a pickup truck with 8000K HID's come at you in the opposite direction? Because of the trucks height and the blinding color and intensity of the lights, you lose total sight of the road and whats in front of you. Guys who run systems like that should have their cars impounded and taken off the road. It's just down right dangerous.

It shouldn't effect theft of OEM units at all. There being stolen mainly for the ignitors anyway, not for reuse of the lights.

 

Sounds like BS to me. I seriously doubt this law would pass without any media exposure. I'm thinking the owner of that store is using some RUMOR to boost his own sales. If that's the case, that's some shady a$$ ****.

 

Someone has to get rid of his HID kits.

 

The NHTSA and Fed&State DOT's make these laws. There is no voting by the people. Like State helmet laws, when was the last time you saw anything like that on a ballot...

 

Not voting by the people...voting by legislature. There is usually a docket you can peruse.

 

He's probably referring to the APC fine of $600,000 for selling illegal kits. They did mention that APC and some other companies were selling illegal HID kits but no all HID kits are illegal. More than likely just a gimmick to increase his sales for the month.

 

The K measure is not related to brightness. It's color. So a 4300k light is just as bright if not brighter than a 8000k light as I understand it. It's just that the diff k values omit different colors. http://faq.auto.light.tripod.com/hl-hid-bulbs.htm

Newsflash....there has never been such thing as a Street LEGAL HID retrofit kit...

The only street legal HID lights are the ones that come on the car OEM - or (a little shady, still kind of a gray area when it comes to legality) created with OEM components - i.e. OEM HID projectors/reflectors, etc.

I don't see why this is a surprise to anyone..

 

It wouldn't make ANY difference anyways, since you could still just order them from Canada or overseas. The cost would probably go up though.

This was also brought up in the Consumer Reports magazine a couple of months back, some car companies are making the bulbs too bright or not aiming them correctly from the factory. Have you ever been in front of the new Range rover at night, it will make you go blind. I personally see this as a case where the bad apples are spoiling it for everyone else. Because of the height of SUV's, the light is shining directly into into the rearview and sideview mirrors.
