What to spend $200-300 on for performance?

Right now my car is basically stock, minus a strut stabalizer bar, and a Jim wolf pop charger. I live by Southwest autoworks, so I could get any peice they sell in reasonable time, but I work at a nissan dealership, so I also get parts at 10% above cost.
I was thinking I was going to get a y-pipe from southwest, but would it be cheaper just to but a whole exhaust setup at once(somewhere under $600)? Or is there something that would help performance even more for the $200-$300?

Y pipe from WSP.. then buy the rest when you can afford it. there's not much out there for performance other than intake/exhaust parts for that kinda pricing.

get a Y from warpspeed. The rest of the exhaust will not give you a huge gain.

you can always get springs and struts...or sway bars...or sub frame connectors. These are also performance enhancers just not engine HP enhancers.

I noticed a big boost in performance with a CAI + Y-pipe. I noticed next to no gain when I got a 2.5" custom catback, except a loud drone that drives me nuts. From now on when I mod, the catback is the last thing I'll look at for incremental performance gains.

Crud, I just called southwest autoworks, they don't sell WSp Y-pipes
On their website, they do have the "GReddy Cat-Back SP Exhaust", but it doesn't look like it includes the y-pipe... Where should I get one? I live in phoenix, AZ, am I most likely going to have to get it shipped?
(my friend thats a mechanic said he can get a full exhaust system on the car for $400-$500, it may be a custom one, but would that be better?)

dont go through southwest auto works. go through warpspeed. get the y-pipe, go on ebay get a muffler and take it all to a muffler shop, not a chain shop like midas or minike. have them put the y-pipe on do a catback to ur new muffler. then get a warpspeed CAI. thats where ur money is best

Ok, cool, I ordered and got shipped the y-pipe today!
For the CAI, you said Place Racing type? Think I could MOD a eclipse CAI easily enough?
Do you think I will definatly see a difference on my VG with the y-pipe and my pop charger? And then to CAI?
I don't think I'll be able to break 200hp for under $1000 (and I'm only looking at most for $500, untill I can either save up for a 97 5spd SE, or a 2002...)

on the VG you will have a long and expensive road to 200 hp.

i mentioned Place Racing because they run the pipe and filter into the fender well AWAY from the heat of the engine. gives slightly better results. i have that. as well as ENTIRE exhaust. it makes a tremendous difference. car is "awake" and quick.

Bonze, Do you have sway kit? I just installed ST and wondered if I had clearance with a y-pipe?

have you been puffing and passing?? under $1000?? hmm lets see: how much are you starting off with? now tabulate each mod, the equivalent pwr increase and the price. ah...i see an ecu, a rebuild, a new tranny, a udp among other things in your future....enjoy though...it feels like a lost cause...

Find a local cam shop, and get some custom cams, or get some cams from MotorSports Auto (www.zcarparts.com under the Z31 section).

i have ST lowering springs, Tokico blues, ST front and rear anti-sway bars. y-pipe not affected. no worries there.

next on agenda, already in box, is Fidanza flywheel, Exedy stg. 1. at same time, i will swap the VG tranny for the VE with factory VLSD. this tranny is 2300 bucks new from nissan. i will also need the VE's half-shafts and hubs to do this properly.

with those mods, the lighter flywheel to "liberate" some horsepower, the grippier clutch, the VLSD making contact "posi-traction" style, my lil 'ol VG should really rip for N/A. the car is already significantly different. so i am expecting a fun bonus with these next things.

lophix,

yes. it is sort of an overlooked thing you can do. VLSD will make quite a bit of difference. but this mod "system," ie, the clutch/fly/tranny/shaft thing, is not cheap. it is rather extensive, too. a lot must be removed from the car suddenly.

this is why i am amassing parts for the complete job all at once.
