other than looking for any scratches on the piston rod, I guess you can adjust them to the same rate and compress the piston and watch it slowly move up. do that to both front pair and then back and see if they are moving up at the same rate just to check consistancy.

That's hard to do. I've seen shocks/struts that look like crap on the outside but it was hard as heck to pull/push the shaft. Then I've seen some the other way around. Buying used shock is a gamble regardless of mileage. Are you buying the struts from a friend (someone you see on a regular basis) or someone from the internet/paper (someone you probably will not see again) maybe that can help you make your final decision.

Here's three bits of advise on used struts:

1. Don't do it.
2. Buy new.
3. see #1 and 2.

I bought used Tokico HP's a while back. It was a well known local org. member so I felt comfortable. when we had my stock struts off it's was easy to tell by compressing them that they were totally shot. The tok's did not act in the same way, they actually rebounded.
So, IMO, buying used struts is on a situation to situation basis. I would probably not buy some from an unkown person that is half way around the country.

yes. i30 is right. DONT BUY USED STRUTS unless you know the person real well. and even if you do, with the amount of snow we had and the number of potholes on the whole east coast, I wouldn't buy used struts. who knows what they went through. dont say we didn't warn you.

KYBs only come with one year warranty, unlike Konis which come with lifetime warranty. I installed used struts on other members cars some busted up on the thread section. So far so good the actual shock was in good working condition.

the good thing too was the adjuster dials on the fronts were damaged but were replaceable for free thru contacting KYB.
