What is safc telling me in regards to air flow?

Last night I did a couple of full throttle runs in 3rd gear. I had adjusted the afc to -10% from 6000 rpm to 6500 rpm, since I'm running pretty rich with the 8:1 disk. 10% is not a big change, but I'm making adjustments in small steps to be safe.

Anyway, after the runs I checked the air flow readout and the maximum was 80%.

Does that mean that the mafs was at 80% of maximum airflow and had 20% capacity left?

Or does it mean that the safc was telling the ecu that the air flow was at 80% (and the real air flow was higher)?

In other words, is 80% the actual airflow or what the safc is telling the ecu it is?

I believe it's the actual airflow before adjusting the data. Once you hit 100% it's time for a 300ZX MAF

Thanks, Matthew. That leads to another question: how does the safc know what 100% of airflow is for a particular mafs? Is the maximum mafs voltage known from the input settings you enter? That would be my guess.

As far as I've been able to tell all the Japanese manufacturers use similiar voltages/sensor in their cars; that's why there's so few options when you setup the SAFC.

The In 4 Out 4 tells the SAFC what type of signal to detect on our car, but I'm wondering what you would use with the Z MAF. If you look in the manual you'll see examples of the different In/Out settings, but the Z usually has 2 MAFs not 1 as would be the case on our car. There may be some other way to get the SAFC to work correctly, but based on what I know about the SAFC you might have to do some research/testing to make it work.

I do know for a fact that the HKS AFR works with the Z MAF on our car though. The HKS unit allows you to input the voltage range so that it can modify the signal rather than using set maps like the SAFC.

We can talk more about AFCs tomorrow

??? I've never heard of using a Pathfinder maf in a Maxima. I have heard of using a Pathfinder throttle body, though.
