Engine shuddering until it cuts off
Engine shuddering until it cuts off
Please help!
I have a problem with my '91. It has an auto tranny and starts to shudder after it's been on the road a while (not idling - driving only). If I continue to drive it, it eventually cuts off. It starts to happen after it reaches normal operating temperature. If I pull over, turn the car off, and wait 5 to 10 minutes the problem stops for a while and starts again after I resume driving. I keep up with all the regular maintenance, the temp gauge shows a normal reading, and the battery and alternator were replaced recently.
The battery and alternator were replaced in hopes of stopping the problem but it didn't make a difference.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

could be your cylinder head temperature sensor, Mine whent out and i couldnt even idle, it would run, shudder, then turn off. Replaced that and it worked fine, run a diagnostic on your ECU, theres a write around here somewhere, that should tell you
Yeah, yeah. Stupid me. When was the last time you had the rotor and distrbutor replaced? Like Strider negro said, you could have bad wires. Using a multimeter, check the resistance of each wire. As long as the resistance is less than 30K ohm, the wires should be good. As for the rotor and distributor cap, parts only cost about $28.00 total and takes about 15 minutes of your time (real, real easy).
I have had a problem with my car "resisting acceleration" for some time now. Recently, it started dying whenever I went over hard bumps on the highway. I took it in to Nissan and they told me I needed a new air flow meter . This is a very expensive part, around $490. I decided to try and find a used one. A local used part delaer had them for around $90. The first attempt made my car much worse. After only a few miles down the road my car was really resisting and even "bucking" it seemed. The next day I had another part put in the car and things have been better since. The car still occasionally dies, but the acceleration is better than it has been in years. Anyone else experience this?
Sorry I wasn't clear in my story. It was the same part, the air flow meter. The first one was bad, the second one worked, if only marginally better than before. I wonder if I should really bite the bullet sometime and get a new one or if something else is causing the engine to die over bumps.
Hmm..dying over bumps sort of sounds like a loose connection of some kind- like it's ok just driving along, but being jostled shorts something out for a second....I'm sure you've already checked something simple like that, though..

I hope my SE does not develop that problem. What was the other part that you had replaced?
