my exhaust vs. the police

hey. recently here in good ol MA. i have been pulled over and given tickets for my exhaust. the 1st ticket 2 weeks ago was a 40 $ fine for have a 'moddified exhaust' thats what was written on the ticket. At the time told any modifications to a exhaust are illegal. Tonight a was pulled over and it is written on the ticket, "Exhaust purposes moddified to increase noise", this time 50 bucks. ****ing bull****. anyways i can't believe this **** is happening. tonight i was told by the police officer that any exhaust which makes it louder then stock is illegal. now i know this can't be true. anyways i was wondering if anyone knows the exact laws here in ma? tomarrow im going to the lybrary(laws) and to get my car inspected, hopefully it passing inspection means it is all legal, and possibly i'll get up to Lou's Exhaust and have a chat and see if they will possibly write me a note saying it is legal and professionally installed? or their advice...anyways any advice or help guys!? anyone in the similiar situation? thx...

What about those Harley motorcycles? They are loud. I am curious if they frequently get tickets as well.

Yeah but Harleys dont need to be modified to be loud

Anyway, check your laws, and if you dont see anything wrong, get in touch with the manufacturer of your exhaust and ask them for help.

If they are legal in all states, they may fax you some kind of compliance letter or something.

Good Luck.

Harleys also have a patent on the sound of their exhaust approved by the Government and they have special agreements I know down here in Colorado anything louder than stock IS illegal, and I assumed it was the same in other states...

I had the SAME freaking problem with my EXHAUST when i was in Maine. Any exhaust work done to amplify the sound levels over stock is considered ILLEGAL. It was VERY annoying, because all I did was change the exhaust so that it had a better "tone", and the sound level just went up slightly. But the police didnt like that, and pulled me over atleast once a week, and gave me warnings each time ( luckily no ticket) for a month, and then I got out of the state. The thing that IRKED me was everytime that I got stopped, there was this LOUD *** muscle car driving by, but since they were "stock" they werent harassed, even though they were 3x louder. But the good thing was, after a few months of the police harassing the people with modified exhausts (that werent TOO loud), the people got together, and filed a complaint to the local police dept... Saying that the officers were just plain harassing them, because of just the TONE of the exhaust, not that it was excessively loud.
I think that there shouldnt be a law that penalizes you for modifying your exhaust, BUT there should be one for exceeding a certain dB level. So if enough of you guys are getting pulled over for no reason, you should get a petition together and give it to your local PD. We did, and they arent harassing us anymore now.

Hey Torgus, Where in MA do you live? I love Lou's Custom Exhaust. I go to the one in Brockton, because I'm out of Easton. When I have a problem or need anything done concerning my exhaust I go to them. I'd like to know what town you're from seeing as how all of your cops seem to be *******s... Its obviously not brockton, because that place is full of rice burners with the obnoxiously loud 9'' mufflers, and so everyone would be getting pulled over. I may be wrong, but I don't know. I should probably look into those "laws" too. What do you have for aftermarket exhaust parts? Get back to me we should talk. My screen name is c0mpletecontrol .

Goodluck, but i doubt you are going to find anything with looking up laws.. the problem is they leave everything up for interpritation, and your not the one who makes the call on them. They pretty much have it down so the police can give you a ticket for whatever they want. I was getting tickets at the Berlin Turnpike because they said my PIAA superwhite 9004's were not stock bulbs and were accent lights. Even tho the company had a notice sayng they are street legal and DOT approved. The BEST way in my opinion to handle this is going to your local police department. If you are friendly with them, you can have them check over your car and they can give you a notice of approval for different modifications made. I am in CT so i am not sure if it is the same in MA, but if you are friendly with the local po po, it is definately somthing to try. Now when i get pulled over for, lights, exhaust, anything like that i show them the paper work, and they are on there way. Worth a shot.
