Got the transmission back on...but...
I had by far the best time ever driving my Max today. Reason: It's been laid up for 2 weeks and I've been driving my brother's 1986 F150 pickup...damn does that thing suck. My Max feels like a damn Ferrari compared to that thing!
Ok...the tranny went back on nice and smooth...all went according to plan...but I'm getting a recurring (varies with speed) clicking sound at times.
Ok...let's see if I can explain this...
You put the car in reverse and start backing up. You disengage the clutch (pedal down) while coasting backwards and you hear this recurring clicking noise. It only happens coasting backwards in reverse with the clutch in. If you engage the clutch or shift to neutral, it quiets right up. All other gears are beautiful.
When I backed it out of the garage, I thought my throwout bearing got knocked loose (it sounded as though it were spinning around in there), but I'd be hearing this noise with the pedal up, and I'd hear it always...not the case.
My father told me it might be the backlash on my reverse gear...sounds about right, as the problem only occurs when the gear is being rotated by the wheels.
What do you think?
PS - Thanks to all who helped out on this job by posting info. If I ever meet you, I'll buy you a beer or something
