5-spd transmission problem, synchronizers?

This problem is sort of difficult to explain, but here goes. I don't know exactly when it happened but now when I try to shift into second gear it would grind even with the clutch in. The 'gate' which stops you from putting the transmission in any gear doesn't exist on the second gear. I was wondering if anyone had a similar problem. I'm thinking this calls for the transmission to be taken apart, how much do you think this will cost?

i spent about $400 in just parts when my 3rd gear syncros went bad last month. I had mine done by a friend on the side so I only paid $100 for labor which included dropping the tranny fixing it and putting the tranny back in. good luck on getting it fixed.

Can you shift fine if you rev match?

Thanks a lot, hopefully nothing else is damaged inside the transmission. Car problems always seem to come at the most inopportune times for me. =[

sryth-
If I rev match it goes in pretty well with a little bit of grinding, I'm taking it in tomorrow to crack the transmission open.

Nismo-
After I put in redline it shifted a heck of a lot smoother

Sounds like your syncro is gone. You might have other problems (not sure about the gate), but yeah...basically the tranny needs to come out a be split in half to proceed any further.

If you don't mind potentially wasting money, try the redline. I have a feeling you could save yourself the trouble and just hand it to the recycling center
