how much better is a dealership tune up than one I do?

Ok, I was wondering what else the dealership does when you go in for the major servicing that is any better than what I can do myself. I can do oil/fuel filters, clean intake, clean throttle body, flush engine, do spark plugs and all the other basic stuff, but what can justify the 600+ dollar quote the dealership gave me. Do they hook it up to a machine and do anything worthwhile like check o2 and knock sensors, etc... or are they doing the same exact stuff i can do in my own driveway? THANKS!!!
If you ask them what they change and what else they do, they'll usually tell you. Go hear what they have to say for a laugh
It's the same thing you do, but they overcharge for parts and labor. Someone posted something about the dealer saying that it takes 6 hours to do a brake job, but it should only take about an hour or two at the most.
For a tune-up, they'll charge you like $15 for each spark plug which is $90 right there. A few more over priced parts and your parts total will be like $200 and they'll charge like $400 for "labor". They'll finish everything off in like half hour, but they'll keep the car for like 3-4 hrs saying that they're still working on it. That's why it's called the stealership

The $600 overcharge is mainly due to the work being done by them. If there's any problem, you can go back to a Nissan dealer. Also, since all they do is work on Nissans, no one knows your car better, supposedly. But, with the things like the internet and places like Maxima.org, those notions get blown out the water. For basic stuff like plugs, O2 sensors, etc, DIY. But for things like an emissions problem and warranty stuff like TSBs, have them do it.

You must have trouble with the english language because I did say "supposedly."
Like I said earlier, for stuff like TSB and such, you have to go to the dealership because you can't do a TSB DIY without the risk of voiding your warranty.

Please take into consideration underlying costs, from tools to the water they drink, its all apart of the price. How valuable is your time? Some people make tons of cash and its worthwhile to bring it to a dealership. Im not one of those people :-(
i'm pretty sure they do a whole bunch of other stuff like making sure sensors work and they'll make sure all hinges and stuff are lubed up and stuff. and like someone said, dealership service is more for those who aren't mechanically inclined and make enough money to afford the high cost...me? i'm buying this Husky compressor kit i saw at Home Depot. man it's sweet. 5hp (i think) and like 50 gallon tank and 100 piece tool kit (air ratchet, impact wrench, gravity feed spray gun, grinder, etc.) all for 300 bucks...pretty sweet!
yeah so i'm gonna stick to servicing my maxima and accord in my garage unless it's a real big problem...which i don't see happening...=)

At my local Nissan dealer they cant do anything right. They misaligned my trunk when fixing the latch. When I went for an oil change (long ago, with my previous car (altima)) in which I paid $27 for, they did change the oil, but did NOT check all the fluids like they were supposed to (power steering was almost empty next day). I gave them my Altima for the whole day, for them to drive around and find out why it kept stalling out sometimes, and they gave it back to me saying they couldnt find a problem (I later figured out the MAF came loose every now and then).
I say F%^K Nissan dealerships, as much as I love the way my Maxima looks, I kind of wish I got an I30 to take advantage of a REAL car dealer.
