Maxima Drag Racing

ever since i bought my maxima, and started doing research on them, ive realized, why did i waste so much time and money on my honda accord, a car that only runs 14.6. that thing had an engine and tranny swap, FULL bolt ons, dyno tuning with the apexi VAFC. these maximas run 14.6 with basic bolt-ons.... what was i thinking??? anyways, my basic question is with intake, y-pipe, b-pipe and a muffler, i should be into the 14s correct? (i have good tires, no extra weight, and i am a good driver, (been racing for longer than ive had my drivers license))

"It's not a Honda."

When I mention the Maxima as an alternative to pouring thousands of dollars and countless hours into Hondas which never have enough motor stock and require swapping or at least serious mods, the above is the #1 reason I get for why they wouldn't get a Max. I even mention the excellent reliability, sturdy modding platform, world class VQ engine, and poor resale which makes them excellent buys used, and they still will not budge for the most part. Many seem to be hung up on this little badge...

If the Maxima had the above badge on the hood, everybody would be all over the car.

Anyways, welcome to the darkside. You had an H22A / Prelude tranny swap, no? 5th Gen or 6th Gen Accord? I used to have a 2001 Accord V6. bleh......

Y-pipe companies:

Warpspeed
Budget

Cattman

Try searching at the test site (big bold red font above) and you'll be able to learn all about them.

Personally, I'd go with the Warpspeed y-pipe because it has a lined flex section and excellent build quality. You don't need mandrel bent tubing either.

As for mods, all it takes to go lower 14s with MPH near 100mph is an intake, y-pipe, MEVI, JWT ECU, and some decent tires and not overly large rims. Pretty much $1600 will get you low 14s (14.3s or lower) in a fully loaded 4th gen Maxima on street tires assuming you can pull a lower 2.2 60'.

Yep, you can even get acceleration that rivals the BMW 540 6 speed and the 240hp BMW M3 (prior model) for about $1500-2000 in well choosen bolt-on NA mods. Spend some money on good springs (H&Rs, $220), shocks/struts (Koni's, $420), subframe connectors ($300), summer tires ($400), good rims (you're 300ZX rims are actually ideal for handling), and the 4th gen Maxima can be made into a very serious FWD sports sedan. It can't match the feel or ultimate handling characteristics of the BMWs, but the overall numbers will meet or exceed the numbers of most BMWs.
