Let me start off by saying that I did use the Search function and was unable to find any information on what I am looking for.

Now...

Can someone tell me exactly what a short throw shifter does? It is only for 5-speeds right?

Thanks!!

It is only for 5sp's and what it does is it shortens the amount of throw it takes to go from on gear to another.
Usually by and amount of about 30% or so, but it does make a difference, trust me. Oh, and when you shift, you won't look like you're playing the slot machine like the stock shifter..haha

What is a good short throw shifter, and how much do they go for?

Stillen has a very good short shifter for about $220. I have one, and I like it a lot. It's way better than stock.

I know that SMC makes one too, which is a pretty good one (I believe).

What I did was cut the stock shifter about 1.5 inches and then epoxy the **** on the the stock shifter, yeah it's not as cool as the genuine short-throw ones, but it does the job and cost me only the cost of 2 hacksaw blades. I do not know what the aftermarket shifters look like, but mine looks stock and has alot less throw. Just my 2 cents.

How does the Stillen STS feel? I've heard not as smooth as the stock one, but I've never actually been in a Max with it.
