Dissappointed with the quality of the old Pioneer headunits..

I have the top of the line DEH-9200r headunit.. the faceplate is GONE. The buttons for volume and other controls were the most stupid idea ever, they are rubber and THIN.. they have worn through completely over time and broke.. the deck still works though but the face looks like hell.

what do you guys reccomend I do? How much can I get for the deck without a face on ebay?
Faceplates seem very expensive..

Which 'reliable' and quality deck can I get for under 250$.. if any?

thanks.. the cheaper the better

i know a lot of people will disagree but i have always used kenwood excelon headunit. i have never had any problems with them and i have had 6 of them. they are well laid out and have hella features. my hu in my max is now over 3 years old and still looks brand new. i also love the mask+ on the units. the only non excelon deck i have is the panasonic 7300 dvd/lcd unit in my a4 and i have been very happy with that as well.

I've bought a couple pioneer units off of ebay w/ missing faces. I haven't spent more than $25 shipped. I've also bought faces for the same radios and put them together to have a working radio again. Try searching ebay for pioneer faces. You may find a face for that model or a different model w/ the same face. If you are going to buy new, I suggest an Alpine. Unlike maximaseefu, I have not had good luck with Kenwoods. I've had four and every one had skipping problems after 1-1/2 - 2 years. Other than that, I loved them.

I used to do a lot of watching/bidding on car audio. I've even bought brand new amplifers for under $40. What can I say, I'm cheap

I think Alpine is the way to go. I have an old Alpine (7840 I think) that's like four years old -- works perfect. Never had a problem with Alpine in the past, just upgraded. I am probably getting a 9815 when I get more cash.

I've had bad luck with Pioneer, bad luck with Kenwood, Sony used to be OK (but I don't like their new stuff much), I had a cheap Rockford Fosgate MP3 (RFX9000) player that wasn't bad. The best thing to do is get a deck with a **** instead of buttons for volume control. Every HU I've had with buttons went to crap.

Biggest factor is the owner -- what features you like and things you want.

just my $.02

Ditto. I'm a big Kenwood fan. I have the Excelon KDC-X859 and love it. I just wish that Kenwood would create a HU that has a single DIN CD/MP3/DVD unit like Alpine has.

That is Very true, but what other companies offer theft replacement? If your ESN is active, and your radio is stolen, then Eclipse will send you a new one. And of course the 3 year warranty isnt bad either.

Use the remote control it came with, or get one of the steering wheel remotes.

My bro has a DEH-P8000 that I gave him a few years back.. The buttons are worn through. the display is dead, but the unit still works so he just used the remote control. Granted having adjust the head unit from memory because display is dead makes things interesting. But it still works

I have bounced between Eclipse/Alpine and Premiere (pioneer) for the last 5 years, and I'm finding that Pioneer units seem to be less flaky then the rest. I must say Eclipse is still the cleanest sounding head unit of the 3, but my DEH P940MP is not far behind.
