Advice on brake purchase? *UPDATE*

My front brakes are scrunching when they are hot. (regular driving with little braking they are fine, but after some hard stopping they start to scrunch). Gonna check them out tonight. I will leave the rears as they are.

If, worse case, my rotors and pads are screwed and I need replacements should I go with Nissan OEM or something else? I've heard that our rotors are rather small, but I have to admit I drive reserved most of the time so I can't see that drilled rotors are really something I need.

Ideas?

*UPDATE* Well I took apart both front brakes. The rotors, though not looking super-new, are not in bad shape and are smooth. All 4 pads have a good bit left to them. I don't know what kind were used but they have a single ridge in the middle. I did notice a small rock had SOMEHOW gotten inside the braking system on the right. When you lift out a pad the housing that it sits in had the rock in there. It was smaller than a tic tac and I can't imagine it would have caused this scrunching sound but the brakes definitely looked fine to me. *shrug*

LOL still don't know what scrunch is. it depends on what your willing to spend and what you want out of your brakes ie, strip racing, casual driving. give more info..

Well just for the sake of fun I'd sleep better at night with nice drilled rotors and some pretty calipers, but really I am a cheap skate so I just want the basics (without buying crap).

To try and describe the scrunch more: I used to have the same problem on my sentra. I took the brakes apart and realized that the pads had totally worn down and were scratching the crap out of the rotor. So, the scrunch was a crunching scrunch (that's what it sounds like!) sound. You'd know it if you heard it - rough metal being pushed against rough metal scrunches. That's what it sounds like in this situation, although I know the rotors are smooth (you can feel it), but I'll check the pads later and see if they're in a bad way or not.

I don't know how much 2 X nissan rotors and 4 X nissan pads (two per wheel) would cost and I don't know how much two upgraded pretty rotors and pads would cost (stillen or something!)

I just replaced my front rotors and pads. Went with Brembo blanks for the rotors and Raybestos Quiet Stop pads. Total cost was less than $150 for all the parts. IMO, stay away from OEM parts.

There's a group deal on 5th gen '00 and '01 rotors right now.

http://forums.maxima.org/showthread.php?t=244894

I just ordered a set of zinc-plated slotted rotors. The guy offers zinc-plated blanks as well. He's also selling stainless steel brake lines and brake pads.

Peace.

i would go with slotted rotors. drilled is known to crack. slotted also wears the pads evenly from what i've heard..LOL he beat me to the post

Dawg,

Did you get your Brembo blanks from NOPI?

I had a similar problem with my 2K1 at around 30,000 miles. The front brakes started making some odd sounds, when I pulled them apart they looked fine. Now, while I might be cheap, I am also lazy. So, once I had everything apart I had the rotors turned for 20 and put on some Performance Friction Carbon Metallic pads from Autozone (60.00 I think and am not 100% sure on the name). Problem solved for well under 100.00.

I would have gone with some fancy rotors and that but mine had plenty of meat left on them and I really haven't had a warping problem.

I thought that these cars were mechanically identical but I guess they are not. Either that or these people sent me the wrong rotors. The box says Nissan 25575 and the part #437+1765 but my stock rotors are BIGGER than these. The pad hangs over the edge and there is just no way these rotors are for my car. Now I have the rotors that are worthless to me.

Stay away from EBC cross drilled and slotted rotors- my Max cant stop with those and Hawk HPS pads. I'm going to give the rotors another 200 miles to see if they get any better- says to allow for 300 miles- which I supprased already. Stock rotors with Hawk HPS pads stop on the dime. When they get old- they like to get noisy.
