350Z exhaust tone

Since this is my first post, I'd like to say thanks to everyone for all the great information. I become a first time Nissan owner about 6 months ago. This forum has served me well; rewire fog lights, Injen CAI, strut bar, etc.

I would now like to increase the exhaust note a tad bit. I really like the sound of the 350Z. In fact, I would like for my car to sound like it. What after market exhaust system would make my car sound like the 350Z's setup? Or can I install a 350Z exhaust on my 03 Maxima (auto) - single exit of course? Opinions and suggestions are welcome.

Thanks in advance, Tony

remove your stock resonator and replace it with a pipe... it will increase the sound a little so it will have a nice growl to it at WOT but quiet when you are cruising down the interstate.

The Powertech muffler that I just put on has an awesome exhaust note. The only downside is that it drones slightly at ~70mph, but I can live with that. It is a very deep and nice sound.

If something where to happen and you needed to take the vehicle in for service, they are sure to notice this and may not do warranty work,

just something to think about, Sorry

Get a Powertech 1012, it sounds very similar to the Z, but without the soft tone it has. Its very agressive with mild droning from 2000-2500 rpms.

Thats not true, I have a full cat back , straight pipe intake , full suspension and a lot of other stuff , and even used to have y pipe . I have had many warranty issues taken care of at my local dealer.

Is that maybe cuz you have a good dealership? Isn't that an oxymoron? Do you live in a black hole? Anywayz, I really like the G35/350z's exhaust note too. I'd like to have that sound that they get when just cruising there is that soft rumble that says "don't **** around punk!" mmmmmmmmm, don't **** around punk

Unless the manufacturer can prove that the modification caused the defect, they must perform warranty work (as per the Magnuson-Moss Warranty act):

Even the FX35 sounds wicked. We got behind one the other day and my wife commented how awesome it sounds. Too bad my stock muffler doesn't sound like that.

Powertech, Greddy, ect. are all just straight through "rice boy" mufflers. If you want to make your 3.5L sound really good, go with a chambered muffler, such as a flowmaster 40 series. Get a 2.5" b-pipe and a 40 series muffler for starters and you should be set.

Or if you wanna be a pioneer and do a Camaro dual setup, go with an 80 series, transverse muffler and run a pipe around the tire well. I'm not sure 5th gens can do this though, since theres soo much crap down in the way.

In my opinion i think the 350's is a little to tame sounding, its got nice notes but just not strong enough. my dad is thinking about buying one and even he says that it would have to go. But it is an improvement over our sound

Thats what I'd like to do. Just cut out the resonator and replace it with a pipe or all new piping from the cat to the oem muffler? Any idea how much?

You could get a crush bent 2.5" Bpipe for like ~$60 installed. I am sure a shop could mandrel bend you one for around $100.

my 3.0 v6 sounds like a 5.0 V8, even deeper. All I had to do was sprinkle a little pixie dust in my intake manifold and click my heels twice and all of a sudden my engine deepened....and burbled louder...and LOUDER....until my car roared like a 5.Slow built mustang.

Have retained your stock resonator with this muffler?

In the US it's spelled "canister", internationally it's accepted as "cannister" - so who knows?

My 350's exhaust sounds like the 350Z. Maybe you could get a 350Z and then you'd have the same note.

As for aftermarket setups, I haven't heard one that is similar, but I'd have to think along these lines:

The 350Z has 2 exhaust routes, one for each bank. So that means that the volume is 50% of what the Maxima would be. Secondly, you'd have to find who made the 350Z muffler (DaveB?) and see if they make them available aftermarket at a cheaper price than Nissan sells them for. Then go get it installed.

-or-

Visit a local junkyard and buy a 350Z muffler from them. Install it and enjoy. Sell your old muffler. Do not throw it away.

On that note, I've got a new take-off 350 muffler that I would love to make someone a deal on!
