how do you feel about the stock clutch???

Hello...I'm new to maxima.org and I had a question....I have a 99 max se-l 5 speed and I hate the clutch. My clutch seems to start to catch about 2 - 3 inches off the floor but it isn't fully engaged for about another 4-5 inches....what is that about? am I the only one who hates this? I would prefer for the clutch to catch at the top and only have an engaging distance of maybe 2 inches. If anyone knows how to fix this/adjust this, or knows of an aftermarket clutch that catches high and tight please let me know. This is my 3 car, my first car was a 1983 bmw 320is the car was great and it had a high heavy clutch. My second car was a 1989 jeep cherokee with the same type of clutch. I love everything about my max except the clutch...it drives me crazy and it's very uncomfortable to drive. ohh and by the way, I have 50K miles on my car. thank you very much

it might be air in the lines, but in my opinion i like this better because it gives u more leway, altho my new aftermarket stock clutch isnt quite the same as my stock one was the stock clutch is one of the most reliable

Maybe the slave cylinder needs to be replaced.

no I don't believe it's the slave but I'm gonna get it on a lift this weekend and check...I think I'm gonna bleed the lines out too so that it's fresh hydrolic fluid...thanks again everyone

to be honest with you that kinda sounds like the clutch master cylinder....here's a question for you: Does the clutch catch at a different place often, for example, it will catch normal one time then low another? or if your in traffic and you are holding your clutch to the floor for a long period of time does you clutch catch almost right off the floor? if this happens that is definately some sort of hydrolic leak, usually. most of the time it's the slave, but sometimes it can be the master cylinder leaking on the shaft, this is more rare but you can see it leaking on the inside of the car up by where the clutch pedal is attached to the clutch master. if you find out that it's something completely different please post it. thanks

thanks dave.. but there is no leak.. at least i don't think so. I check the cylinder if i'm low on clutch fluid and the level is the same! What else could it be?

my clutch has been acting up for a while now

i recently replaced the pressure plate, throwout bearing, rear main seal and the disc.. it was nice and light a week or so then got really hard like before.. the shifter is also real notchy and hard to get into gear.. i toyed with the adjustments under the pedal and it made things better for a little bit then it went back to ****..

i dont know what to check anymore, i flushed the fluid, checked everything.. everything seems to work ok..

but i kind of got used to it

I'm not quite sure...maybe air in the lines....you can buy a bottle of I think the proper brake fluid(I forget which one dot 3 I think but don't quote me) and bleed your clutch until your new bottle is empty and your clutch master is full...that should just about guarantee that there is no air in the lines and that you have all new hydrolic fluid. don't gravity bleed either do a pressure bleed. If you haven't tried that it's worth a shot a bottle of brake fluid is only like 5 bucks.

I don't know....the only other thing I would have thought would be the master and slave cylinders but I doubt it...and I think that the adjustments for the pedal just control how high the pedal is and if you adjust it too low, I think although I may be wrong, you can burn up your clutch. Your clutch sounds funny but I would probably love it....I like a nice heavy clutch that catches hard, anyone got any suggestions of what aftermarket to buy and what stage. I was thinking of a stage 2 act or something....please give me some advise....thanks

i also still get lots of chatter despite everything being brand new

i dont know what bothers me more, the heavy feel of the clutch or the notchy/hard shifter.. at times i can't even get into gear..

stock clutch just catches in the middle like that.. if you want u can adjust the height of the cluth. there is a lil nut/bolt type setup near the top of the cluth peddle..u can adjust it to lower or heighten the clutch. well im pretty sure there is one anyway.. i had it on my g20..
