Recently downloaded the write-up on painting them myself. Any suggestions would be of great help. Should I use High Heat Engine Enamel? Is it necessary to sand and prime? And lastly, has anyone had any condensation problems after taking the headlamp assembly apart? Any and all advice/write-ups...positive or negative...are greatly welcomed.

 

yes, make sure you use a high engine paint, just mask off the two areas and do 3 coats letting it dry about 20-30 min between each coat. its alot easier than you think, once you get going you will see. dont worry about using a primer or sanding. no problems with condensation for 4 months so far. look better than the actual AE headlights IMO!

one more hint... i melted my first set due to the heat... first put aluminum sheets on the rack, then use a wet towel over the sheets, then place the headlights on the towel. The goal of the oven is to heat up the glue only and not the rest of the headlight.. the wet towel will not let the bottom from melting...

 

Point taken...thanks for the heads up. Are the headlights fairly easy to remove? Also, what did you set the oven temp at and how long?

 

put the headlights on a tray in the oven for 7-8 min at 250 degrees. then you just want a flathead screw driver and work all the way around pulling the cover off the housing. make sure you use some towels or gloves to protect your hands because the light will be hot

 

you can even use it at 200-225... takes a bit longer.. but once the glue is hot, you have 5-10 mintues to work with it... use a butter knife, its a bit thinner... once you use your knife or screwdriver it will most liekly not be usable again... unless you can clean it off... well actually the scredriver you can just heat it up and scrape it off...

 

I painted mine with a flat glossy black.
I taped the chrome around the head light and painted the rest black with flat black glossy engine paint

 

Be carefull when putting the headlight assembly back together, I had some glue showing up inside the headlights. I could not get all the glue out and so ended up just buying the AE headlights.
