Gauge problem with Maxima 2k

My maxima stalled on me yesterday because apparantly, it didn't have any gas . I barely bought my maxima a few days ago with, what I thought was, a full gas tank. From full, the gauge went down about 2-3 centimeters, not even a 1/4, while I had it and it stalled. I ran to a near gas station and put some in a little tank and when I put it in the car, it turned on. Then i went to the gas station and filled it, 18gal.
Anyone know what the cause of this can be?
Could it be the instrument cluster itself or the fuel pump or maybe a sensor?
Feedback appreciated. Thanks

Yes, there maybe something wrong with your gas sending floating device in the fuel tank. I think this was discussed before not to long ago. I would try to do a search. Did your fuel light icon come on in the dash?

In the meantime the max will get around 400 miles/tank city and 500/highway, so just use your odometer to estimate

if you drive it down to 18 gallons per tank when you fill it up i bet you could get this. I have only ever put 15.5 gallons in my car and i thought it was going to run out of gas. The service manual says it is an 18.5 gallon tank but i am not going to test that.

Misleading fuel gauges can happen on any car. I think its my fuel pump and its not reading the fuel correctly
