Hi, I am looking for a 5 spd maxima. I found one for real cheap and everything is in great condition except for the fact that it has really really high mileage. I can get an engine with like 60k for about $450. How much do you think a performance shop would charge for an engine swap??

 

What are you calling "high mileage" ?

 

performance shops sumtimes charge some mad labour for an engine swap. if u really wanna know your car you should do it urself. saves u money and gives u alotta experiance with you ride,

I bought a 1996 Maxima SE 5 spd a couple months ago and it is in excellent condition. However, every time I look at the 163,000 mi reading on the odometer my heart sinks with apprehension of possible repair costs that might creep up. So getting back to the original post, how much really does a swap cost?

Do a compression test and if everything is good with that don't worry about it. The fastest all motor maxima on this message board has 150k on it.

 

LMAO, thats crazy, and i hear all this BS about how a 60k car can beat the same car with 100k, its all on how well u treat your car man....

i dont know how much it would cost but to install trannies, some places charged me around 1200 (when i did 5 speed conversion). Engine's...i would say if u look long enough u may find a spot to do it as low as 700? or around that. Anyone charging over 2 grand i would laugh in his face.

Oh, and Maxima.org rule # 53: whenever receiving recommendations from a newbie member, please consult with others. u tell someone to install their intake, not their engine, sheesh...

 

Compression test & leakdown test. If they havent been replaced, you should replace the knock sensor, coolant temp sensor and timing chain tensioner.

Also go ahead and do the full 60k mile service and flush out the transmission fluid. New struts are probably in order too. But I doubt you need an engine swap.

 

replacing the engine is nice and all. but everything else on the car has 168k of wear also pumps,springs,tranny, etc. when you swap out or engine with the new one the milage will still read the same on your guages. also the value of thh car stays the same when you swap an engine. i'd say keep it. unless your doing the swap yourself a shop will charge at least a full days labor. 600+ for labor thats at least 1200 for a newer engine. i'd keep the high milage and spend 1200 on mods. unless your doing fi or nos you should be fine with your engy

 

Id start to cry If I had to install my engine, Thats not a one man job, and also its not a noobie job like mines to do! O ive seen shops charge anywhere between 900-1500 depending on how much trouble your engine is

 

Well, I plan on putting in a turbo kit. Would it be safe to install on the 240,000k motor if the compression is satisfactory?

 

That's iffy.

Carbon buildup in the combustion chambers could develop hot-spots which would result in detonation.

 

After you get the turbo installed, as soon as you put your foot on the gas your engine will blow.

 

Theres no point changing ur engine and having that rest of ur car in 238k shape.
