Gashes in the sidewall are not fixable. Almost not one tire repair shop will touch it.

If its not leaking air I would not worry about it. If anything maybe put some tire repair sealant under the gas so the part does completely peel back.

it's illegal to fix a sidewall... looks like you'll have to replace it

If it is just a slight cut it is only cosmetic. There is no way to fix that.

The 'fix' for the tread portion of a tire will not work on the sidewall.

The tread area of a tire is thick, with many plies, belts and around 11/32nds of tread (when new). A plug through a hole in the tread area has lots of 'surface' (due to thickness of the tire at this point) to cling to.

The sidewall, however, is much thinner than the tread area, with no belts, no tread, and few plies. Nothing for a plug to cling to.

Examine the gash carefully. If you can see the one or two plies usually found in the sidewall, and there has been cutting of these plies (to ANY extent), don't take a chance.

I realize this is not the news you were hoping for, but we need to keep as many MAXIMA.ORG posters alive as possible.
