Got me a 92 SE 5spd!!!!!!!!

It's dark gray with cloth interior and 125k miles. Body is in real nice condition only a minor dent in drivers side front fender and one rust spot starting to come through rear drivers wheelwell other than that car is clean. Paid 2500 for it. When started the car ticks till it warms up then it goes away I'm assuming that's the dreaded VTC issue that everyones talking about. What should I start doing to help this issue if thats what it is. I'm already planning on changing to full sythetic oil when the first change is due. Also it has the Bose stereo in it. Is it a decent stereo or should I just swap it out? I was thinking about just adding a mp3 changer to it and thats it but if it sucks I'll probably swap out everything it'll just take some time till I get enough cash to do it. The guy is giving me a spare bose headunit as well so it would be a shame if I swap it out cause I'll have 2 of em sitting around. I'm gonna miss my 2000 Celica GTS but I'm looking forward to no more car payments and more room.

I share gowireless' opinion. 3rd gen VE 5-speeds (when running right) rock.
I suggest you get rid of the bose system, but if it is all working OK, maybe leave it for a while and do some other mods first.

Bah Bose tape deck doesn't work so I can't use my portable cd player so looks like I'm getting something afterall too bad you can't use stock speakers the ones in the front sound nice.

Anyone know what size speakers are in doors? I already know 6X9's are in back. Gonna order speakers and a headunit probably this weekend now. I'll get a changer later down the road.

I think they are like 4 inch speakers in the front. Maybe 4x6. Just go to car toys or some car audio place, they'll tell you what size they are.

James92SE makes 6.5" speaker pods for our cars. PM him for more info.

its either 3 inch or 4 inch, something really small... If you stick with the small speakers be sure to get some of the Speaker Saver bass reducing things so your speakers dont blow up

Magowin, you can use the Bose speakers with an aftermarket HU if you bypass the amps. Do a search, and you should find a lot of info. Congrats on the purchase! I just got a 92 SE 5spd Black/gray cloth this past weekend

I just put an adapter in the parts for sale 3rd gen to use your existing bose amps/speakers with an aftermarket HU.

If you are interested, I have the HU for sale, too. It's an Alpine 7840. Works perfect.

Ah thanks for the info guys. I already ordered a head unit and speakers last night. I got a JVC KDSX990, Alpine SPS690A and Alpine SPS460A. I'll let ya's know how it all sounds when I get em in. One of the rear bose speakers are blown so using them wouldn't have worked for me anyway. The fronts did sound good though but figured I'd change em all out.

You should have cracked open your door panel before getting the 4x6s. I think the stock size is 4" (round), but you need a speaker pod (or hack up the bose one) to get 4x6s in there. Maybe they will mount across the metal if you take the bose pod out, but I am not sure.

You should take them back, get 6.5" fronts and have James92SE make you pods. You will thank yourself later.

I bought a set of Diamond Audio 6.5s and used James' pods and they sound damn good. You can check my website out and take a look at them if you want.

I recommend James' pods too. They rock. I cut the rear bose pod to fit into the hole and mounted the pod to that. Sounds quite nice.

Ugh damn I checked computer in Best Buy and on Crutchfields site and they said 4X6's went in doors. Hmm I'll check my order status to see if they went yet if not I'll try to change em to 6 1/2's.

I think the 4x6s are for the non-Bose cars. I am not sure about this (both of my 92 SEs had Bose), but just get the 6.5s anyway. Even with coaxials, you will get better sound.

Ugh stuff came today it was shipped yesterday so I couldn't do anything. Man never dealt with such a fast ups ground shipment in my life ordered the stuff mon 10 at night and it came today. I'm transferring my Bass Tube from my Celica as well so not really worried about the 4X6's too much the bass tube will make up for it. Thanx for all your help anyway.

did you figure out if they will fit in the stock location in the doors? Or do you have to modify it?

I would like to keep this in mind in case I ever want to sell the car. I can keep my current speakers and just toss in some 4x6s and run them off the deck.

good luck

Yeah 4X6's are a no go they wouldn't fit so right now I'm working off of one bose speaker until I get Alpine type s 5.25's put in saturday. OMG though I put in my 10" bazooka tube in the trunk facing about 3-4 inches from rear of trunk and OMG it never sounded near as good in my Celica. For anyone looking for speakers at a really reasonable price I highly recommend these Alpine type S 6X9's they smoke the stock jbl stuff in my celica and there just running off the head unit amp. I'll let ya's know how much better it is after I get the 5.25's in sat.

You should take a picture of your Max for us. I like that charcoal gray color.

As soon as I figure out how to post some I'll take some on my digital camera. Is there webspace here to upload pics or maybe I could just have it be my Avatar.
