No, they shouldn't. A manual transmission will always allow you to get better gas mileage. And without looking, I'd have to bet that the 6th gear on the 6 speed has more overdrive than the 4th gear in the auto.

Now, people may tend to drive the manual harder, which is a whole nother story.

The epa rating for autos is less for autos than for manual. City driving is much less because of transmission slipping.

in your auto, what's the rpm at 93mph?

lower rpm is higher gas mileage... at 93mph my 6-speed is turning 3k rpm (exactly).

Not sure here, but i can tell you 80mph on my auto is 3k rpm.

That is, until i switched to lower profile tires.

so that seems to me an auto should get lower mileage and the stick should get higher mileage.

right?

yup just like i said, if he is saying that he gets 30-32 mpg on auto while his rpms are higher then a 6 sped should definately be able to reach 35-40 mpg.....

My rpm is roughly 3400 when im at 80.... So i guess my question is why do manauls get better mpg when our engine rev's higher at those speeds?

Yep.

If anything, i think it has a lot to do with driving style. Though i'm a pretty aggressive driver at times, if i really baby it - 30mpg is not impossible at all.

While my mileage is terrible in rush hour, usually getting no more than about 20-21mpg, my auto gets great gas mileage on the highway. I usually average around 31-35mpg while driving on the highway. This is actual mileage and not the cars computer which is consistantly 3mpg off.

Are you guys serious? I would love to know how a 3.5 Maxima is getting a real 35-40mpg highway.

IMO NO WAY!

this question was answered 3 times in this thread... because at the same speed, A MANUAL ENGINE REVS LOWER!

my 6-speed is turning 3k rpm at 93, his is going 84 at 3k rpm.

so, if he speeds up he'll have more rpm and get less mileage... or if I slow down I'll have less rpm and get better mileage.
