Shop around for price, and have it rebuilt.
If you know how to replace it yourself, someone is selling rebuilt trans on ebay.

You might want to have the fluid flushed first, to see if that helps. Chances are if it's already slipping, the flush won't help, but if it does, you won't have to spend the money. Also, do a search. There's a ton of info on auto trannys on this site.

LUCAS TRANSMISSION FIX contains no solvents or anything else that would be harmful to an automatic transmission. It is a thermal stable blend of petroleum extracted additives designed to correct existing problems and prevent new ones in automatic transmissions.

LUCAS TRANSMISSION FIX stops slip, hesitation and rough shifting in worn transmissions. It completely eliminates most seal leaks, lowers operating temperatures, and stops foaming in hard working units. A must for motor homes and commercial vehicles. LUCAS TRANSMISSION FIX is excellent for preventative maintenance and will extend your fluid life up to four times longer. It will also extend needed protection to planetary gears.

One 24 ounce bottle of LUCAS TRANSMISSION FIX can be added to existing fluid (a moderate overfill is not harmful). A second bottle may be necessary in large or badly worn transmissions

ALSO known as transmission in a bottle

I had a Maxima that, when cold, took about 30 seconds to go into drive. One whole bottle of Lucas and a day of driving solved the problem. Good stuff.
There is a band you can adjust. I suggest you check in a factory service manual to find the correct adjustment.

Factory service manual is kind of expensive. Only the dealer has them. You can sometimes fine them on ebay or used book store. Put a post on this site, I'm sure someone will help.
I think the socket was a 32mm, but I could be wrong. Good to have one as the boots are always spliting.

I meant more along the lines of going through the trouble and spending the money to convert your auto vg to a manual. Might as well save the money for a bit and buy a 5 speed SE.
