Frequent Engine Stall 2000/AT

My 2000 Maxima with AT stalls all the time, but randomly. In fact, it will stall 10 times a day for a week or so, then stop doing it for months. Then it will repeat the whole process again. This has been going on and off for a year or so now. This is my wife's car, so it's all stock.

Here are the symptoms: It happens when the engine is cold AND warm. With the A/C on or off. In both hot and cold weather. When I slow to stop and the RPMs drop to about 700 it doesn't seem to be able to keep the engine going. It will sputter down to 200 RPM and almost stall, then rev a bit up to 1K RPM, sputter again, and so on. Some times it will sit at 700 RPM for a while, then slowly start dropping off until it stalls.

Last year I replace the MAF when I was having a problem getting power at high RPMs, so I expect (HOPE) that isn't the problem (although it did seem to do it less right after the sensor was changed).

I'm not sure what to look at and would appreciate any help. My only guesses are fuel intake clogs, MAF again or maybe a computer problem??

Thanks for the help.

How many miles are on your Max? Do you have a check engine light on or is it off. Did you have the dealer plug his computer to your car to see is any codes come up? It is most likely a sensor some where. I would check all my sensor connections. There are quite a few sensors.

Thanks spoon, I didn't find that article in my initial search. I'm not sure how to clean the throttle body, so I'll probably take it in this weekend. I hope that's it!

maaan, THANKS A LOT for that thread, Spoonismax. I've been having the same problem for six-seven months now. Although the car wouldn't stall, the rpm would go down below 500. Does anybody know the best way to clean the TB? Should I take it to a shop/dealer or can I do it myself?

thanks everyone!

From what I know about the Throttle body, if you have a CAI or an intake, you take off the CAI where it connects to the TB. Clean the TB real good and put back on .
If you have no CAI or Air intake then you have to disconnect the platic tub where it connects to the throttle body, just like if you were going to install an air intake or CAI. Then clean the TB and reconnect.

BUT..... I have a 5 speed and my RPM's were running low, too, I watched what gas I was using becasue I think I had some water in the tank. I bought some gas treatment and fuel injuector cleaner and used SUNOCO 94 and I have not had any problem since.
It could also be because you need a basic tune up. No better time to upgrade the plugs and have the timing adjusted.
BTW.... I did not clean my TB like I was advised by the dealer. So that may not be the problem.

I just did the major tune up few months ago, and the MOTHERLOVERS said that my car was in PERFECT condition. hell, they were supposed to change the plugs etc. but the problem still appears to be there. i'll clean the tb and if it still doesnt go away i'll have to go to the dealers and screw their brains out. car is still under power train warranty, so if there's anything wrong with powertrain they better take car of it. car has 45K on it.

again, thanks everyone. if you have anymore ideas what it could be, we'd be glad to know.

hoopsbwc34, sorry to kind of use your thread like that, but it really helped me

No problem, I'm just glad to hear others have the same problem. Let me know how it goes when you get the TB cleaned...I'd like to hear if it helps. I plan to have my mechanic do it on Tuesday so I'll try to report my results too.

You can do it yourself...it's really not that tough...I know as much about working on/around car engines as my dog does, and I still got it done in an hour...there's a real good write-up you can find by searching (have the exact URL at home), or just send me a PM, I can tell you....dont pay to get it done though, not worth it.
