2002 6-spd

I'm considering getting a 2002 Maxima SE. I was wondering if you guys had any comments on the 6-spd tranny offered in this model. I've read reviews that the shifter takes too much force to get it into gear and the pleasure of the movement just isn't there.

From personal experience, how does this affect how you like the car?

whoever said this is high... it does not take "too much force" to get into gear. The throw is a little long but that's not really bad, just long. You might have heard about "2nd gear notchiness" and I think it's crap. Get the car, you won't give the tranny a second thought.

Very happy with mine. A bit notchy going into 3rd gear when new, but it smoothed out by about 3000 miles. No problems since then.

I love mine, just switched to redline mt-90 this weekend. The shifting took a little getting used to, it was my firstr MT in 12 years. I love it, get one, you won't be disappionted.

I have 43,000+ on my 6 speed. No problems with the tranny.

Don't wait too long, it might not be there when you go back...

The transmission isn't pefect but works well enough. Like some have said, I've noticed it can be notchy going into third gear too. It's mostly when it's cold outside but maybe it's just me. Beware of the clutch "howl" TSB too. The engagement of the clutch is high pretty high but you'll get used to it. However, compared to my '91 Toyota Corolla, the 6-speed is a dream. It's kind of nice to know that the 6-speed '02/'03 Maxima is a pretty rare car so enjoy it!

I have 12,500 miles on my wife's 02 Maxima, no problems so far, and we love it.

I like my 6spd in my 350Z better (shorter shifter)

I got my 6speed less than a week ago, and its everything i expected. Its taking me a little getting used to, yet, it is my first MT car. I suggest that anyone who has a 6 speed to lower the clutch so that engagement is sooner, makes shifting much easier/better/smoother. Good luck.

How can you make this possible?

Another question:

Anyone install an aftermarket short shifter in their Max?

not out yet, due to the different design, but a company (mossy?!?) is releasing one soon, and it won't be cheap....they had some bugs but it seems they are making adjustments.

to shorten the clutch engagement, rather than explaining, do a search...i know there is a thread out there. and it's very recent. you should find it in the first 3 pages of this forum.

I think the thread is called shorten your clutch throw. I tried it and it worked but there was much discussion on premature wear. I switched back. Get the six speed.

If you only install 5 gallons as opposed to 15 gallons, does that add horsepower ?

6spd is awsome, Here's a little experience I had coming back to school from Chicago, there's along country road where is straight as hell and the road has just been resurfaced.

Nobody in sight, wide open road, WOT on 2nd gear, Redline at 6500RPM, shift to 3rd, car doing 60MPH before going into 3rd, still WOT on 3rd, pulling like a Mothafuker! Hitting 100MPH at 6000RPM, I let off the gas and went back to "fuel misier mode" in 6 gear.

The actual even is 10x more exciting than reading the feeling I had, Its fun as hell! (For someone that never been to the drag strip)

Get a 6spd!

P.S. The only time I regret not buying the "autotragic" is when I encounter "Chicago Style Traffic". Also, Injen Intake also help contribute to the fun i had.
