2001 faster top speed than 2002?

I was at a party last night and I was talking to a guy that had a 2001 SE 5 speed. (Has since totaled it) He claims that although the 3.0 has less HP and Tq, that it has a top speed of 151, which is higher than the 3.5's 142ish. I have taken my car to 142 and it wouldn't give much more. I told him that I didn't buy it. I don't see how a car with that much less HP and Tq can be faster, but I thought I would ask to see if I am wrong. He also claimed something that I disagreed about, but am not for sure. He said that drag is measured by aerodynamics, which I agreed on, but also by the trnsmisission and it bearings. Is that part of the drag measurment on cars?

similar top speeds (about 154-ish)
no, mostly it's measured by aerodynamics... They have similar transmissions and I wouldn't be surprised if they used the exact same bearings, so your friend is full of

Normally, there are 3 ways a car can be limited on it's top speed:
1. Computer limited.
2. Red line in highest gear.
3. Drag.

Drag can mean anything that generates more friction at a higher speed. This includes wheel bearings, air resistance, transimission, etc. So yes, more than air resistance determines top speed in a drag limited car.

I was up to 143-145ish in 6thgear with plenty of rpm's left but wouldn't go anywhere- its not whether you have room to redline- its a fuel cut-off after a certain speed

There is no known speed limiter on the 6 speed cars. They are drag limited and in most situations the top speed is about 147ish.

I've hit 145 mph and from what i remember i was round 5000 rpms. I def think i could have gone faster but highway began to get a bit bumpy and unstable.

I've heard from many different people that the AE and a few other model maxes havre no governer. That true?

I ran as fast as 143mph maintaining about one carlength lead on a TL-S on the NJ Turnpike. NOTE: TL-S has a published top speed of 150mph.

Peace.

Fifth gear will take the car to it's top speed and it will get there much quicker than sixth. I have had mine over 140 several times and I have yet to find a logical reason to go to sixth.

I believe the SE 6spd's are electronically limited to 155. I remember dmbmaxima88 saying something about "bouncing" (limiter) when he had it really pegged.

According to CarTest (power, gearing and drag calculations)

2001 SE 5MT: 144
2002 SE 6MT: 148
2002 SE 4AT: 148

You would probably need some mods or some help (downhill, tailwind, etc) to ever hit the alleged "155 limiter" in the 6MT, which I know Steve had.

You need some serious power to go your top speed in the overdrive gear. Also stock speedos are notoriously inaccurate at those high speeds. Even a 3-5% error will make your 140mph a 145mph run. Add some aftermarket tires of whatever OD and the accuracy goes to hell even more.

mine was pretty smooth at 135 but I wouldn't have cut the wheel over.

I doubt I'd do it again, either... it isn't worth what happens if you get caught

143-145ish here against a LS1 SS Camaro.

It was slightly uphill and took FOREVER once I past 130ish. Plenty of RPM left, just not enough HP to overcome wind resitance.

Roads? Where we're going we don't need roads!

I hit 100 chasing a new t-bird down an entrance ramp. Couldn't need that much road.

I've held my indicated 92-93mph cruise control maximum for damn near 1hr. on several occasions before I've had to let off.

Plenty of roads here.

AZ cruisin' is sweet (along with a few other SW, W and Upper MW states). I just returned on the 12th after spending 9 days travelling between Phoenix, Prescott, Sedona, Flagstaff, the canyon, Kingman, Vegas, Bullhead, etc. The whole time I'm ridin' in a Hertz Taurus rental with an out-of-alignment front, left tread (shakin' like a wet dog for 1300+ miles) wishin' I was in my Max. At one point between Flagstaff and the canyon I actually passed an 03' SE. I almost stopped and beat the **** outta the guy just for lettin' that happen.

the highest i've gotten was 139. I have an auto. The nissan service guy tells me that the way the car is designed, it's very hard for it to go pass 150, unless you're going down a huge hill.
