I have a '96 Maxima SE and i am having trouble starting my car every time. It will crank and crank and crank and crank then it will maybe after a while maybe a short time kinda stutter then catch and start up and run great. it does not do it every time but it seems to do it at least 3 or 4 times a week. By thw way the fuel pump just got replaced. That doesn not imply however that any other fuel components were checked except the fuel filter that was checked out and replaced. Please give me anything to go on and ask questions to maybe get info i did not add jogging your brains. This is driving me crazy. Thank you to whoever answers.

 

i also have a 96 with 110k on it.. i have this proble every morning because my car gets cold overnight. it usually starts on the 2nd or third crank.

i recently cleaned my TB and have changed spark plugs.. anyone know how to slove this problem??

I agree....given what you described.

You say new plugs..FYI: any plug other than NGK will have cold start/idle problems too.....I don't have an explanation, but its the truth by my experience...you can go cheap and get NGK coppers if the laser plats are too pricey for your wallet.

How about Fuel filter...its part of a tune up...but definately not the whole problem here.

 

I had the same symptoms for about a month and my starter needed to be replaced.Check to see that you have enough cranking power and that the cranks are consistent?Make sure your battery is fully charged.

 

Engine Coolant Temp Sensor was the culprit in my car. I took my maxima skiing each year and saw road salt and grime built up around the sensor. I should have detailed the car's engine bay to remove the salt after each season. go figure

I recommend checking there if you are having random engine shutoff / stalling or starting problems.

If the car runs fine after startup, my guess is possibly a weakened starter motor. I had the same experiece but with intermittent no-crank at startup when it really started to go downhill. Check your charging system, battery & starter motor.

1) Check the water levels in the battery cells (if it's not a maintenance-free batt)

2) Top off with distilled H2O, as needed

3) Using a hydrometer ($2-$5), check the condition of the individual battery cells. (If 1 or more of the cells is bad, you may need a new batt).

4) Loosen, then re-tighten the ground to the chassis as well as the battery terminal connections

5) Check to see that the leads to the starter motor are tight & corrosion-free

6) Using a digital multimeter, you should get >13.5 volts between the battery posts with the throttle advanced to about 2000rpm. If you're showing less than this, the alternator isn't supplying a sufficient charge to the 12v system.

7) You can remove the starter motor & bring it to any auto-parts place & they will be able to bench-test it & tell you if it needs replacement.

im having the same problem i changed the coolant sensor today but i did have trouble starting it at least once today lets see how i do till next week

 

I have the same problem on my 95 and look like a Crank sensor (code 47 & 11)

Do you have check the CODE?
