Key Code

Just some useful info for those who have bought a used maxima with only the valet key.
If you're lucky the dealer left the key code tag in your glovebox.
I was! so now on monday I get to have a master key made for $5.
The key code is 4 digits long and at least on a 92 max starts with the letter X.
The label in the glovebox says that it is supposed to be removed by the dealer before delivery to the customer.
So good luck and hope those of you (now me excluded) with valet keys get to find this tagn and make a new key for their beloved max!

No. The key code and the code to reprogram the DTES are completly different. The key code is four digit number that is normally located somewhere in the glove box on a sticker. The DTES code is a long number that is on the DTES control box which is located well UNDER the glove box.

All the key code is some number that the dealers use to assist in making a duplicate master key. Reason: sometimes the keys become worn out or they may have broken. Without an orginal key to duplicate, you would be SOL. However, armed with the key code, you could have another key made in no-time--that is if the sticker was not removed by the dealer or the previous owner at some time. If the sticker is gone, you may be able to have the dealer cross reference the VIN to the key code; however, I am not sure if they can do this.
