What is this stuff?

I just replaced my interior carpet from gray to black, and when I was removing my gray carpet I encountered some stuff - just above the passenger foot area, all this thin plastic stuff (black in colour) started to chip off... it was on top of some insulation type material... it was all along the foot area, but only some of it chipped off.

What is it? is there any potential problems with some of it no longer being there?

That's probably sound deadening material that the factory puts on.

Was it kinda like some plastic foam type stuff? If so, just put some Dynamat or Peel 'n Seel (or whatever it's called and however it's spelled) there and call it good.

is there still an inch thick or so cushion on the bottom of the carpet? if so, then you are talking about the tar -ish compound used for sound deadening.

yes I believe that is it... there is about an inch of insulation stuff undeneath it, as well as underneath my carpet... so I guess it would make sense that that is the deadening tar stuff.

Thanks everyone.
